This might sound daft, but try adjusting the lever away from the bars, then try finding neutral.

Is the bike fitted with cruise control.
It was the splitter cable Dave, and yes bike has cruise control.

Thanks for the replies Guys, The bike is a 2012 model. Strangely enough the lever is now functioning as it should!!!!....I was playing about with the lever working it in and out when all of a sudden the resistance came back and it is fully functioning. I presume, even though there is no rebuild kit,...
