Re: Varying mileage in varying temperatures
I'm in Edmonton, Alberta. Northern climate - there's snow in our impending future, for sure, just not sure how long until it lands. Sometimes I get to ride into November, and start again regularly riding to work in March or so. "Winter IS coming"... ...

Varying mileage in varying temperatures
Hi all! I'm a year-round (until it snows) kind of rider in Canada, and am wondering if any of you have observed something similar to me. I have a 2010 R1200RT camhead, and in the last few weeks, I've noticed a variance in mileage that I get, depending heavily on the ambient tempe...

Re: Newbie... 4 weeks in...
Removal of the wind deflectors... I had those off this winter doing some similar cleaning. Steps: Use the torx L shaped tool from your tool kit - insert it into the bottom of the mirror housing and change the position of the mirror until the torx tool goes into the set screw (beh...

Re: Winter Maintenance List
Wow, what a contentious topic! I had no idea there were so many opposing view points. I've used EBC pads in the past with no issues, and I think I'll stick with them and see how they go on the RT. If they don't last as long, you might be right that it would be of a less...

Re: Winter Maintenance List
It doesn't get better braking hard - I think it seems to get worse. I did thoroughly clean the calipers with soapy water and a toothbrush, and brake cleaner, inspected the pads, pushed the caliper pistons back into the calipers, and replaced the pads as well. The old pads wore ve...

Re: Winter Maintenance List
As my luck would have it, things are warming up here again (yes, its February, and a good melt on in Canada). When I took my bike out in January (see last post), one thing I noticed was a bit of shimmy at high speed from the front brake (but only when applying the brake). The rea...

Re: Winter Maintenance List
Not so much of a chinook, but we did have a decent melt for a few days, dry roads, and it was +8, so hey, why not! I'm a bit enthusiastic like that (some call me a nut or worse). But ya, it was good to take a lap around town.

Re: Winter Maintenance List
Status update on the winter maintenance list. All done. Wheel repaired, front brake discs re-mounted and torqued (with loctite). New front and rear brake pads installed. Curious - I made it out for a spin yesterday (in January, in Canada!) and I was getting qu...

Re: Winter Maintenance List
Thats the route I went... Run a tap through each brake rotor mounting hole to clean up the threads, blue loctite and 19Nm, which doesn't seem like that much, but hey, I'm not an engineer. I also installed new front brake pads, and waiting on the arrival of rears. I'm go...

Re: Winter Maintenance List
Wheel came back from repairs today, looks mint, but cost me a kidney and a left arm. It will be going on my balancing stand to check for runout and balance (without tire). It looks very close to perfect, so I suspect maybe a few thou of runout, but certainly much less than 1.5mm....

Re: Winter Maintenance List
I'm expecting a phone call from the wheel repair shop. I'll have a very close look at the wheel once its back. Curious tho - each manufacturer has a maximum wheel runout spec (runout is the variance one way or the other as the wheel spins as measured by the lip of the rim).&n...

2010 RT stock muffler question
The last time I took my muffler off to dismount the rear wheel, I noticed when I tip the muffler one way, then the other rocking it back and forth that inside the muffler, it feels like something slides inside it back & forth. It also seems slightly lighter than I remember. I...

Re: Winter Maintenance List
I thought it was very unusual too. I bought this bike 2nd hand 18 months ago, and the previous owner provided me all the maintenance records done by the dealership to that point, and everything had been done according to BMW's maintenance schedule religiously. I don't know if the...

Re: Winter Maintenance List
I didn't replace the E clips (circlips), and didn't even have them off. On a twin cam, you can insert feeler gauges without taking anything apart. I think I dislodged the E-clip when I was putting the valve cover back on. Someone else mentioned that those clips are not ...
