Re: Cylinder head protection
Are the bmw cylinder head covers adequate protection in a tip over or should I get the guards from ZTechnik, Illium, wunderlich, etc? I have found them to be more than sufficient, my bike has been down twice and zero damage. Most drops happen in your garage, or at low speed maneuvers, in ...

Re: Oil filters and oil weight
Hors, We don’t have a 5/40 weight synthetic oil in the US. Tim - I use Castrol Power1 4T motorcycle oil, and it's definitely available in the US. You can get a 6-pk on Amazon, it meets or exceeds all the same specs as Advantec oil. Also, if you are a BMW MOA member, they often h...

Re: Protecting plastic bits - temporarily
The course was great, and best of all no drops! Lots of very tight turns, u-turns, and some awful thing they called the iron cross which was a cross-shaped series of cones where you did a u-turn in each arm of the cross, reversing direction each time. But I did install very attra...

Re: Protecting plastic bits - temporarily
I’ve got the Wunderlich pannier protector bars and some BMW head guards. The work very well. Don’t ask me how I know. Haha, and those cylinder protectors work well too, don't ask me how I know either! My class is at noon today, I'll give you all an update about how it went when ...

I will check into that, thanks.Sprintgull wrote: Over here car accessory stores sell stick on protectors for car bumpers (fenders?) for about £10. Put them along the edge which will ground first. They are black and look like they were always there.

Any number of things, including your exhaust and swing-arm.MEM62 wrote: What is there underneath that is more expensive than the panniers? Not much I think.

Re: Protecting plastic bits - temporarily
I'd take the panniers off!! :alas: Pete Haha, good tip, but that won't prevent damage to the bike. The panniers will absorb the fall and protect some more expensive components underneath them. I'm thinking I'll just duct tape a foam pad, like the interlocking floor til...

Protecting plastic bits - temporarily
This weekend I am taking a precision maneuvering course on my 2016 RT, this is very low speed u-turns, and other skills, similar to what police training offers. I have heard that there's a higher risk of dropping the bike in this course, which makes sense. I already have the BMW ...

Re: Newbie - 2018 R 1200 RT with 6k miles
Met some folks at Amerivespa in Seattle last year who had modified the top case to turn it into a dog carrier. Another couple had a trailer for their dog. I think I'd rather try pulling a trailer with my RT rather than modify it for a sidecar.

Best price I've seen is from KFM Motorrader online. I bought one and they shipped to the states for less than half the cost of the dealership. They are new BMW replacement parts, identical to what you'd get from the dealer.

I use Castrol 4T synthetic. Here's a case of 6 quarts for about $50. It's 10w50, but should be fine for your bike. https://www.amazon.com/Castrol-10W-50-Synthetic-Motorcycle-Bottle/dp/B008MISF54

Re: New Guy here question on buying.
That's about what I paid a couple years ago for a 2016RT new, with 3 miles on it. Most US dealers, in my experience, won't come down much on price. Your best bet is to get extras thrown in, or negotiate the run-in service and 6K service to be included. If you haven't al...
