Re: Mexico: R1200RT vs old Honda ST1300
yeah, that V4 takes up all the space between your legs and there's basically no where for the heat to go except up. I was grateful for that extra heat about half the time last year. This year on the RT, I was cold all the way to about Tampico. For sure, if the air temperature got over 95F I had to s...

Mexico: R1200RT vs old Honda ST1300
I've ridden through Mexico the last three years. '22 and '23 on my old 2003 Honda ST1300, which, in retrospect, was not really suitable for the roads. In October I bought a new (2009) RT. I've ridden about 7-8 thousand miles per trip. This year I took the new bike from Berkeley, CA down the east coa...

Re: In Mexico with a "check oil" message
No oil pressure light... so there is some oil level float switch. Maybe it's just stuck or something. I will maybe try an oil change, see if fresh oil helps it

In Mexico with a "check oil" message
I'm currently in Isla Mujeres. My 2009 has been great for the last 3000+ miles aside from a burst fork seal from the pinche topes. The (as yet nameless) RT had fresh oil and filter before I left, but I got a disturbing "check oil" message en route yesterday across the top of Yucatan from M...

Fork seal in Mexico
I blew a fork seal today (2009 R1200RT). I can see how it happened on the wretched (topes, truck convoys, no sholder, greasy wet pavement, potholes) crta. 180 before the Isla del Carmen bridge. (Really, an hour and a half of the worst, bumpiest, ruttiest, greasiest road...so many trucks, so many top...

2009 tool roll widget
I'm leaving for Mexico tomorrow a.m. This is one of the (minimal) tools in the tool roll. What the heck is it?

Recorrido por Mexico
(2009 bought in October with 50K miles) I am getting ready to ride to Mexico next week and was just going over some nuts and bolts. I noticed the date on the battery = 2017! Unloaded voltage after sitting for a month is 12.18v. I am planning to ride about 7000 miles (out to Quintana Roo, down to Gua...

Best seat cover
Is there a consensus about the best long distance saddle cover.? On my last two Mexico trips I was on an ST1300 with a comfy Sargeant saddle. My biggest complaint is that after a long day ride my man unit felt like it had been ground up in a metate. I mean, the RT saddle seems big, wide and comfy, b...

Plastic valve cover guards
2009 with plastic valve cover guards. Put them back on? Or put them in a drawer somewhere? 1) They don't do much 2) ...but maybe they do a little? 3) Have to remove the side plastic to remove them in order to access the valves and upper spark plug. 4) ...how often do I have to access the valves and ...

Dynamic balancing
I bought new tires on line for my R1200RT. Normally, I would mount (with great difficulty) and balance them myself at home; however, since I've upgraded to a beemer, I wonder if it is worth the dough to have them dynamically balanced at the dealership (for $65US each)? I am going to Mexico and am re...

Upgrade from ST1300
Yes, that is my new 2009 on the way out this morning. I named the last motorbike (ST1300)
"La Azteca" after the dependable Mexican quarterhorse breed. I'm kind of thinking this one is "Farmall".- Tue Nov 21, 2023 5:57 am
