Re: San Diego to and from Los Angeles
In what is probably not a record time but perhaps close, I decided last weekend to sell the RT back to the person I bought it from only a few weeks ago. He texted me that he regretted selling the bike and asked whether I was still enjoying it. And although I was, I did my first 120 mile commute last...

Re: OptiMate 4
I just got an Optimate 1 Duo for $50, since my new-to-me 2008 RT came with a pigtail for an optimate. It's worked just fine so far. Summers we spend away in France for 3 months so that's when I will probably keep it connected: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076JSXGBQ?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&a...

Re: Driveshaft inspection
Thanks for posting, I watched this the other day and it's well done (and also takes the mystery out of how the shaft works/fits together - rather straightforward, pun intended).

Re: Anyone bought a bike without a test ride
Quick follow up, have been riding the 2008 RT I picked up some weeks ago, including on a 120 mile trip to LA, and it's exceeded my expectations, it seems close to perfect, with 18k miles. So I was lucky since I did not test ride it.

Re: RT will not Idle
My first thought was to suggest re-checking the chain tensioner work, unless you believe the idle problem arising at the same time is purely coincidental. Not familiar with how it works on the RT yet, but on my 2016 650 Sport when I replaced the tensioner some weeks ago I had to lock the timing in p...

Re: tire/ clutch life for daily riders
Different BMW, but on my C650 Sport I just replaced the tires and brake pads at 10K miles. That bike I ride almost exclusively in town on surface streets (lots of braking and accelerating!). The 1200RT I will ride mostly long-distance highway, so I expect relatively little wear on clutch or brake pa...

Re: San Diego to and from Los Angeles
Closing off my introduction thread, I've been doing short rides to get used to the RT, mostly twisty roads around where we live, and boy is this a comfortable and agile bike. Then, today I decided to for the first time twist the throttle almost all the way and pull to maybe 7K rpms in 2nd gear and w...

Re: Emissions warning
Alternative to GS911 is the (German made) Motoscan app that I use, in conjunction with a bluetooth dongle. There's a free version but to do code clearing, set service date, program TPMS sensor etc you have to pay a modest subscription. I have the highest level lifetime one and recall paying maybe $9...

Re: Home Servicing
I just bought my 2008 RT but will do all repairs and maintenance myself, as I have on my 2016 BMW C650 Sport that I bought in 2018 with only 1,960 miles on the clock (now 11,000). Only factory recalls were done at BMW for obvious reasons. Besides substantial cost savings, my main reasons for doing t...

Re: Bored?
Riding all through the winter I am. Easy you say, you're in Southern California. But, I also rode through winters when living in Geneva, Switzerland, from 2010 to 2017. Only had to leave the bike in the garage a handful of times during those years, due to too much snow ...

Re: Engine revs twist things to the right
Just got my new-to-me 2008 R1200RT last Saturday and I noticed quite a heavy movement of the engine (and hence the whole bike) when briskly revving in neutral. I am sure that is very normal (but do check the engine mounts, I suppose for excessive wear).
FWIW American muscle V8s do the same thing.

Re: Anyone bought a bike without a test ride
Bought my 2009 R1200RT with 18K miles without test ride. I did go look at it, heard it run and spoke at length with the owner. That was good enough for me. Picking it up in 15 minutes so we'll find out today if this was a good purchase or not. Yes, long test ride would have been better.

Amazing result. May say more about age groups that still use forums like this. My 24 year old son doesn't, I think he gets most of this type of info on something called Reddit ...
