Top Box Rack - 2012 Twin Cam RT
Have been looking at ways of securing additional lightweight items e.g. linings out of textile riding suits to a 2012 Twin Cam RT.
Not having had any satisfactory success, now thinking along the lines of a Top Box Rack.
The Top Case is the BMW 49 litre.
Nippy Normans do this Wunderlich Rack, http://www.nippynormans.com/products/k1 ... -20570-003.
Has anyone had any experience of such items, are they any good & easy to fit, does the Top Case Lid remain waterproof. Any issues with aerodynamics/stability when fitted.
Are there any alternative manufacturers out there which you would recommend.

I don't have a top box yet, but when you consider the price of a BMW top box plus the rack it not far short of £700 quid (£510 top box and £129 rack + postage) that's expensive and not even colour coded. I want one but wow!!!!!!!!!!
Re: Top Box Rack - 2012 Twin Cam RT
Dayglo. There are cheaper alternatives. Givi Monokey boxes are well built and double skinned. The fixing plate doesn't look too awful when the box is off. They make racks for the boxes and back rests if you want. Also optional remote locking and stop light. You will need to carry a separate key.
If I had got the BMW box, colours matched for my bike, even with discount and without power or central locking, I would have forked out another £700.
A lot of people will only consider official BMW accessories. I like most of the BMW kit but I can't help feeling I'm being taken for a ride when it comes to their plastic.

I agree that Givi do make some good products, had a fixing plate & V46 Box with Backrest on my 2007 RT.
Wunderlich Luggage Loops would make a budget alternative, http://www.nippynormans.com/products/f6 ... un-1725410.

Put one of these on the BMW 49l top box some time ago...
No drilling of the case & looks very good

Re: Top Box Rack - 2012 Twin Cam RT
I have the Wunderlich rack on my top box. Same as the one pictured above except mine is the brush grey that closely matches the color of the box. It was not easy to install but I did it in about an hour. Two of the screws go in at an angle and thats a pain in the ass. I put a plastic washer under the metal one that was supplied by the mfg, I think it protects the case better.
I used it to carry all our extras on our trip this month. 6000 miles in 24 days and it did fine. Bout 35 pounds on the rack most of the time. Completely waterproof through rain and hail. The hail sucked and was not any fun.
If you have the top case full and 35 pounds on the rack it does make the bike a bit top heavy but not unmanagable. You just have to remember its there.
Im glad I put one on my bike. It was very handy.

The Top Box on the K1600 looks different to that on the RT, although both are 49l.smileymiley wrote: Put one of these on the BMW 49l top box some time ago...

The box is the same.. tho the back rest is different.... I had a 1600 GTL to use when the RT had the shock recall.DaygloDavid wrote: The Top Box on the K1600 looks different to that on the RT, although both are 49l.

Agreed, the Box for the K1600 & RT LC is the same, http://www.ridersbmw.co.uk/buy/BMW-BMW- ... 544630#eq1,smileymiley wrote:The box is the same.. tho the back rest is different.... I had a 1600 GTL to use when the RT had the shock recall.

Sorry DaygloDavid... should have looked at the first post better :not speak:

Re: Top Box Rack - 2012 Twin Cam RT
I am wondering about this.... Per Wunderlich documentation, you are only alloowed to put 4 pounds on the rack, which makes this only useful for a pair of gloves.....Budman wrote: I have the Wunderlich rack on my top box. . Bout 35 pounds on the rack most of the time.

I used a Wolfman small waterproof bag bungied to the rack. I averaged about 30 to 35 pounds in the bag. I carried my rain gear and Ann's armored pants. It was too hot to wear them most of the time. Also carried miscellaneous stuff purchased on the road.
The rack or the top box did not suffer any ill effects from the weight. I have tried to post a picture of the bike and set up.
