Pannier lower locating lug caps screws loose
Pannier lower locating lug caps screws loose
I was browsing through the US RT site when I came across this thread
http://bmwsporttouring.com/ubbthreads/u ... Post951331
The lower lug which locates the panniers has a plastic cap held on by two screws visible when you remove the panniers. There's a picture in one of the messages there. The thread suggests that it is common for these to work loose and some have had them fall out and lost. So I checked mine (2015 RT LC) and sure enough the screws on both the left and right side caps were loose, all of them.
Seems to be quite widespread so I thought it worth bringing to peoples' attention here. I just tightened mine up, didn't use Loctite or anything else as some have on that forum but I'll check after some mileage and if they have worked loose again, I'll use something on them.

I also saw this on that forum. I immediately checked mine (2015RT-LC) and found both sides quite loose. Decided a dab of Loctite would help!
Re: Pannier lower locating lug caps screws loose
And mine, all four screws quite loose. Panniers now feel more solid when on. Very odd as its been the same design for years.

Re: Pannier lower locating lug caps screws loose
Managed about 1/8th of a turn on all 4 screws.
Something to keep an eye on.
Thanks

Re: Pannier lower locating lug caps screws loose
I note they are self tapping screws. So very heavy handed tightening up might not be a clever idea.

Yes, a self-tapping Phillips screw into alloy and clamping a plastic block don't require over-zealous tightening!RTman10 wrote: I note they are self tapping screws. So very heavy handed tightening up might not be a clever idea.

Re: Pannier lower locating lug caps screws loose
At least you still have all four screws, it appears I'm down to 3 screws which were all loose RTman10 wrote: And mine, all four screws quite loose.

I'll add it to the suspect switchgear RTman10 wrote: Demand a warranty replacement.
Re: Pannier lower locating lug caps screws loose
Just to follow up on this, a few days ago I went for a ride of a little of over 100m and checked the screws. They had again worked loose. Previously I'd just tightened them up, hadn't used any Loctite etc. so clearly mere tightening is inadequate.
I didn't have any threadlocker so I looked instead at what glue we had lying around and found some general purpose stuff called UHU Universal. It's not superglue but it was all I had so I stuck a little on each screw and tightened them again. Had a 100m+ ride last weekend and found that they are holding firm, so far anyway.
I'll recheck at regular intervals and if they do work loose again, I'll get some threadlocker or maybe superglue.
