I'll stick with the higher spec. 10w-50 fully synthetic API SL, which has a greater viscosity range for cold starting, than the 15w-50 semi synthetic API SJ.

Looks like both the BMW Advantec Pro (made by Shell) & Shell Advanced Ultra 15w-50 oils are the same spec.

Buy the Shell stuff & save yourself some money.

Reading the label on the back, API SM, JASO MA-2, same as BMW oil.

Reading the thread, most folks just use what they prefer or can get hold of, providing it meets the BMW specs.

Quote him the above and ask him why.
Go into any other dealer and ask for a bottle of it for a top up you won't get any.
On top of that the Castrol stuff was always difficult to find off the shelf anywhere.

Good to know that Castrol is still recommended & used by BMW dealers.

Interesting that looking at the Rider's Manuals for an LC, on the rear cover page, the BMW recommendations have changed from Castrol to Advantec, the lastest edition doesn't have any recommendation.

If your LC Manual has Castrol recommended & the BMW dealer uses Advantec, how would that stand with a warranty claim.

The last, 4th edition of the TC Rider's Manual, recommended Castrol.

On my 2007 Hexhead which partially seized on both cylinders after 6 months & 10,000 miles,
the BMW dealers only measured the quantity of oil which came out of the engine, they didn't analyse it.
I'd be surprised if they did, that they could determine the oil manufacturer.

On top of that, I'd changed the oil at 3,000 miles & 9,000 miles myself, either side of the 6,000 miles service, this was recorded in the Rider's Manual.
I suppose BMW Warranty would only see what was done & documented at the BMW dealers.

The 09/2014 4th edition Riders' Manual recommends Advantec.

The 08/2015 5th edition Rider's Manual doesn't have any recommendation.

The BMW Service + Engine oil change, with filter is £65.52, I've been quoted £68.00, seems reasonable.

The Valve Clearance check is £37.44 + Engine synchronization at £74.88 = £112.32, will be interesting to see what my local BMW dealer comes back with.

Have now got a cost of £88.84 for the valve clearance check & engine synchronization, adding this to the £68.00 for the oil + filter, plus final drive oil change FOC,
the total labour only cost is £156.84.

Based on this cost, will be booking the bike in with Cooper Sunderland for a service within the next month.

If the unit cost (AW) is 10.00, would this be an hours labour at £93.60 inc. VAT.

Cooper BMW at Sunderland's hourly rate is £98.00 inc. VAT, this is based on a unit cost (AW) of 12.00.
