Off to Wales

I,m going to do a mini visit to Brecon area next week with the wife and of course the bike.


Has any one got any must see suggestions or must stay ideas.


We are riding from Southampton area so mid/south wales/Brecon is the preferred area.  Any suggestions on accommodation or eateries is welcome.  We are after hotels and town locations . Any routes you may have for ``garmin is good.

Must do place is the ponderosa cafe on the horseshoe pass if you can get to North Wales.  They do B+B also and it is in an excellent riding area near Llangollen and Betws y coed so lots to see and do.

The Ponderosa is a must meeting place. I have a number of routes around north Wales (it's almost my back garden).

When in the Brecon Beacons, we stayed at The Tanners Arms in Defynnog, very near to Brecon itself, http://tannersarmspub.com/

Although not a town location, the accommodation & food was very good.

blimey thats near to Sennybridge, In the 70s i used to go load lifting there with wessex 5s

I seem to recall a road en route to friends in Aber that ran along the river wye but can't work it out on the map.  We came from southampton. and it was stunning

These are the routes we did in the Brecon Beacons/Black Mountains, available for GPS if required.



IMO, the Horseshoe Pass is over rated & over priced.

The road up the River Wye will be the A466 between Chepstow & Monmouth, (heading North).

Would agree, it's a nice road to ride.

Rhayader and the Elan Valley dams is well worth a visit on a sunny day. From there you can take the mountain road to Aberystwyth. Some really nice scenery

I've stayed at The Lion Hotel Llanbister for many years. Central (on the glorious A483), reasonable and friendly.

Stayed in the Royal in Llangollen a couple of nights back.  Good value and right over the river.  I came up from Southampton too.

A proper bikers hotel that will look after everything for you, Tiv and Nigel who run it are great and are bikers themselves and will advise routes to take and will guide if required - I stayed with them for 3 days and had a great time.

I can second the Bikers' Retreat.
Not that I've stayed there but some friends from my previous bike club were there for the weekend and I met them and led a ride.
I was made to feel very welcome, tea etc.

Must ride the [size=13px]B4520 between Lower Chapel and Upper Chapel, between Brecon and Builth Wells and also the loop through the Elan Valley via the Devil’s Bridge.[/size]
