Just bought an Iconic .... Lots of questions coming

Post by stayingupright »

Just bought an Iconic from Vines ... I only went in to look for a bike for next March
Should be picking it up in two weeks while they get protective film fitted and a high level brake light.
Coming from a F800GS, so a bit of a jump.
I have so many questions I want to ask but will try and keep it to a minimum for now.
I was born with nothing and unfortunately I still have most of it left.

let me guess:

- whats the best aftermarket screen?
- is it ok to leave it on the sidestand?
- what's your hill-start assist technique?
- is it normal for the handlebars to vibrate?
- whats the best way to wire a gps in?
- crash bars or cylinder head protectors?

I could start a guessing game, but all of those and more.

Just ordering a tank bag and pannier bags from eBay

Don't the Iconic come with the high level brake light already fitted then?

Not even looked into that yet but it is basically a LE model with a different colour scheme and a few optional factory extras.

No reason for it to be that difficult .... But who knows!

Its my dream bike and have had to save hard for a few years to afford it so a little thing like insurance is not going to stop me.

You might want to search about the insurance bit on this site, others have had issues with companies refusing to insure the Iconic. There are companies that will, but you need to know which ones.

Thanks for that.

I did remember reading that a little while ago but most people seemed to eventually get it sorted.

The dealer said that there should not be any problems and to let him know if there were any.

Sure you'll get it sorted, had the same issue when a bought a brand new CVO Harley, because it had a SE6 after the model number and not the previous SE5, nobody wanted to insure it as it wasn't on their books. Harley insured me though and the second year all was good.

What ever you do! Don't mention the word Iconic!! The insurance company's have not heard of it!! I finally got mine insured as a R1200RT LE with BMW extra's ... Special paint, Audio, and Top box!
And there is no mention of Iconic on the V5.

I would leave the screen until you have tried what's already on it but there is a larger touring screen from BMW if necessary.
Putting scaffolding on it could be considered a criminal act.  If it was mine it would be the OEM cylinder protectors and the rubber pannier protectors which are quite substantial.
Again until you get it I wouldn't worry about handlebar vibration, it's going to be smoother than an 800 anyway.
It's already wired for a GPS. If you are thinking of altering the bike to fit another make of unit  instead of the BMW one again this is going to mess up a very striking looking bike.
You can leave it on the side stand no problem but the centre stand is no problem to use.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I bought a Nav 5 while I was there.

I have also ordered a side stand enlarger from Nippy Normans.

I cannot find anything about pannier protectors.

Cylinder protectors are now on my list ... Thanks.

I want to give the screen a good try before choosing something else although a slight tint would be nice.
