I thought I might add a top box to my 2016 R1200RT - Sapphire Blue - dealer quoted a staggering £920 for 'the big one' plus a further £144 for painting
Anyone got any comparators or other advice?

I got my 49lire 2nd hand, but in PERFECT condition. Well worth considering if you're lucky enough to find one.

Top case white aluminium with lock cylinder & VIN code = 934.10
Painting of top case = 154.00
High level brake light = 182.00
So, from where I'm sitting, you're being offered a good deal !!!

Lock cylinder and VIN code. These are just the lock barrel with the correct pins in direct from BMW. They cost about 3 times more than the dealer spending 5 minutes coding a blank one. So they are definitely on the make.

£1220 I got done for being colour matched, didn't know this site existed when I ordered the RT.
However only a small price to pay to stop the wife falling off the back!!!

Once you factor in she's well insured and by the fitment of the top box to rule out negligence, when she does fall off, I'll be Quid's in

I had no need for 49L top box
Got the 28L from my selling dealer, box, lock and tax $448 us
Several complaints from fellow riders with large top case, seems cross winds of a certain angle play havoc with handling

Sorry but that is complete bo**ocks, the top case does not impact handling at all. Do you think BMW actually sell accessories that make the bike unstable, that is the whole point of why their kit costs more.

+2. The only time you know it's on and full is pushing the bike around when it feels a bit top heavy compared with no top box and maybe a bit putting it on the centre stand.

I put a givi box on mine, £80 of e bay and the mounting plate was £50 on line which leaves loads of money for a trip some where!
If it's not broken,you didn't hit it hard enough!

I paid $850USD for the 49L for my '08 RT. Then another $100 to get it painted to match. Ridiculous amount of $ for sure. But that said;
1. I love it. I tour, camping, sometimes two up. Need the storage. And commuting to work, it holds my gym bag, briefcase and lunch bag. My briefcase w/ computer does not fit into the side case, and this top case just swallows it up.
2. I have never noticed any issues with the aerodynamics. I would not doubt that it has some effect, just that it hasn't noticeably impacted handling. This includes routine (daily) freeway commute speeds at 80mph, some long desert highways with cruise control set at 90mph, a few "excursions" into triple digits, and plenty of nasty winds and crosswinds in Wyoming and southern Ca desert (I10 west of Palm Springs - ugh!)
3. I like the way the bike looks w/o the top case, even with the matching paint job. But function reigns over form.
So I am very happy with it, functionally. But it is crazy expensive, and I had the crazy cash to spend on it at the time and I was really into my new BMW and wanted to keep everything OEM at that time. Today, at half the price I would snatch it up in a heartbeat. At full price, I'd take a good look at alternatives (Givi, etc).
