Newbie from South Dakota

Post by Sdrt »

Hi All,

Decided to join the community of RT owners. I purchased a 2016 R1200RT this August and have put 4000 miles on it so far. I really like the bike except for the seat, after about 50 miles I'm really squirming and have quite a bit of Butt pain. I'm planning on purchasing a Sargent seat which I hope takes care of the problem. I've owned cruisers before, this is my first sport touring bike. I'm a mere 67 years old and planning on a trip to Alaska this coming summer!

Welcome. Interesting a lot of US guys have issues with the seat. I've also had Harleys and have never changed a seat. I can do 200 mile plus and have very little or no discomfort from the seat. But do tend to stop every hour or hour and a half for a stretch and coffee break.

Welcome. Same move from HDs. R1200RT smiles better. Some big distance guys I've met on the Ferries sit on sheepskin! Worth a try if your Sergeant still doesn't help.

Since your riding may be limited
For the next couple months a custom saddle may be in order
I've had good results with Bill Mayer Saddles BMS in Ventura Ca
Turn around time is 1-2 weeks

Welcome, I recently got off a Goldwing and onto a new 2016 R1200RT. Should have purchased the RT years ago!  The RT performs extremely well on the mountain roads in north Georgia.  My next conquest is "The Dragon" in the Smoky Mountain National Park, crossing North Carolina and Tennessee.

This may be obvious - but have you tried different pants (and underpants!) I find that if I avoid cotton and go for a wicking cloth, I can ride all day on my RT. Did 2,000 miles in France a few weeks ago in temperatures of 90 plus and was fine.

Silk is the answer or failing that rayon.  Any material that doesn't hold moisture works well.  Best deals I've found over the years are discounted Valentine Day novelty pants in Tesco.  Just need your excuses worked out if a visit to A & E ever happens.
