RT Models since 1978
Re: RT Models since 1978
Before my current LT RC, I owned a K1300GT EE. Fantastic bike and great for Euro touring. The real plus with it was the 4 in-line engine, so smooth with oodles of power. However, it was a big ol' lump to haul about when stationary, and after approx 5 years, a few electrical gremlins started to take over , both switchgear clusters, starter cable, OBC! Err, sounds familiar to a point! Anyway, PXed it for a nice shiny new LC RT, having test ridden umpteen different models of similar cc, but nothing came near the comfort and handling of the LC RT! I've had it 15 months now, and still it brings a smile to my face, so it must be good!!
PS Just changed the tyres this week after 9000 miles on the originals, for another set of PR4 GTs. Maybe to the cheapest tyre, but they give me great confidence in both wet and dry riding.

Getting better. Correct colour. Wrong rear rack and seat. Under the rear cowl there is no support. Lean on the rack and it snaps. Just shows how much BMW hsve moved on though.
If anybody has got one of these lurking in the back of the shed with that wheel design BMW issued a recall,on the front one. Didn't seem to matter how old it was they supplied a new wheel FOC. Dig out it's chassis number and visit a dealer. It was some time ago but I suspect it's still valid.

That seat looks right. I only remember the rear rack bring a smaller item. Too many Jack Daniel's at the moment to dig in Real OEM to check.

Re: RT Models since 1978
To get this thread back on topic......
About 20 years ago I inherited my late father's R100RS mono but I could not get on with the vibration .. which turned out to be an early indicator for carpal tunnel problems. So - either get out of biking, or buy something you like....
.. which was a second-hand neon-blue year-2000 metallic R1100RT with radio-cassette player. That machine introduced me to Continental touring. I upgraded in 2005 to a R1200RT with CD-player (the 1100 had spoiled me!) that skipped over bumps, and which was night & day better than the previous model. I put a deposit down without having seen a photo of it after a test ride on a 1200GS.
So onwards in 2015 to a ex-BMW-staff R1200RT LE with 1,200 miles on the clock, which has on-board audio (with Autocom) to which I have added a DAB radio.
I am pleased to say that I avoided the mistake, for me anyway, of going for a K1600 - even after a test ride.

Been down the same road with the addition of a couple of 1150s. I however didn't manage to avoid the 1600. All the CDs skipped even after a warranty exchange.

Re: RT Models since 1978
I've only had 1 rt, my current '11. Having never ridden one. I always looked at them from a distance with a great deal of envy. I stumbled on to my rt through a very generous friend of the family otherwise I'd probably still be looking at them from a distance and saying to myself, maybe some day.. Love this bike.

Whatever you do don't have a test ride on an LC. The outcome is always the same, fall out of love with what you have and your ownership history jumps to 2.

Precisely why I haven't test rode one yet! I'll know I'll want one asap. Which would mean i would probably sell a kidney to get one
