Top box - opening
Top box - opening
Hi Guys. What is the technique for opening the standard RT box? I`ve not had this bike long and haven`t used it yet. I don`t want to sprain the lock or handle by trying to force it. I guess there must be an easy way in.

Insert key and turn to vertical position Remove key and depress key cylinder. The centre piece of the handle will pop up. Lift this and you wil hear a click and the centre piece will pop up a bit further to release the lid which then can be opened. Turning the inserted key horizontal past the three o,clock position will release the outer handle. Pulling this up will release the case from the bike. To remount on the bike make sure thr case is both central and pushed forward to engage the feet under the rack. Don,t depress the key cylinder by pushing on the key. (All this from memory as it,s been a while since l used my own)

Don't see why not, ensures you haven't lost it when you want to lock it again

Please refer to the thread "Topcase Lock Jammed" in the R1200RT Problems section.RTman10 wrote: Don,t depress the key cylinder by pushing on the key.

Re: Top box - opening
Just read it. Seems to refer to things being jammed in the lid. No mention about leaving the key in damaging the lock. The barrels haven't really changed much in the last 22 years which is how long I've had them without incident.

Re: Top box - opening
it might sound like daft question but i found the 49 litre BMW top box always a pain to open/close.
i could never work out if it were locked/unlocked etc
i prefer the Givi system

Re: Top box - opening
Just have to read the disc round the lock. No need for a key on the Givi one. Small spoon works just as well.
The ultimate answer is of course keyless.
