Metal Fatigue - OMG!

Post by Frank123 »

Hi, Well maybe not exactly metal fatigue but my 2009 R1200RT is showing its age with the smooth metal coating coming away from the frame between the front and rear foot pegs. See photo [attachimg=1]. Can this be repaired?

I've seen that many times but normally on high mileage authority bikes.  There is really no cure except replacement.

Yes, remove the footrest hanger & get it powder coated silver.

I agree repainting is an option but it's very difficult to get it a perfect match to the other one.  We had one damaged in Austria a couple of years ago and the local dealer got us a replacement.  The price I think was not huge so I would chech that out against the repair cost.

Recently had the petrol tank repainted on my XJ650, the guy took a side panel to the paint supplier & got a colour match to the OEM spec.

A replacement footrest plate is £271.01, http://www.rainbowbmw.com/BMWETK/Produc ... 602329.php

Recently had a swinging arm powder coated & two footrest brackets vapour blasted for £60.

There you go then.  No expert but powder coating might be s bit more difficult to match.

I had mine powder coated.  The guys at the powder coating shop laughed when the footrest hangers when into the first dipping solution - they had never seen anything so thin. I was told that their coating was 10x thicker than the original , and they lasted another 5 years without showing a mark. I had mine done in a battleship grey colour and noone noticed.

A bike looking that nice? You don't actually sit on it, just wheel it out of the garage every now and then to stare at it then put it back.  :be happy:

Just kidding - that's one very clean bike.
