Rear wheel side play
Rear wheel side play
Hi
My 2010 RT was rearended by a car when i was stopped in a intersection. It was more of a push than a bump. The result was rear frame bent, rear wheel bent, mudgard broken and muffler scratched. It was visible that the wheel, brake disc and caliper woobled a lot.
After all the insurance burocacy being solved, the repair began and they replaced all the items above. However, there was still some wobbling in the rear axel so they changed the wheel support (that star thing that ataches to the wheel) and the brake disc. Now bmw says the repair is finished but i can still see the brake disc moving laterally about 2 or 3 mm against the caliper. The caliper also woobles a little bit. My guess is that the differential was also affected and is the cause of that lateral play. Bmw is saying that is fine and that all R series motorcycles have a little play in the differential.
Please advise.
Thanks

Re: Rear wheel side play
There was time a few years ago when BMW had a lot of problems with the rear drive failures. I recall quizzing my dealer as to the amount of lateral play allowed at the wheel rim. I was told there should be "no" discernable movement. From the damage you describe it sounds like more like a good shunt than a push to me and that a second opinion should be sort. Incidently, not quite sure what you mean by "wheel support" unless you are talking about the Disc Carrier?.

+1 on that. Get a second opinion. Who is BMW who told you it was fixed and who did the work. Hopefully not one of those insurance approved repairers. Our Gee wrote: There was time a few years ago when BMW had a lot of problems with the rear drive failures. Re: Rear wheel side play
On the face of issues like this i have just renewed my insurance with BMW Motorad UK underwriter by Devits and Lloyds. Not the cheapest but hopefully would avoid these issues should the worst ever happen.
Good luck with the bike; as above seek official advice from an authorised BMW motorcycle dealership and then see.

Thank you for all the advice.
They are the biggest bmw motorrad authorized dealer in my country but are also included in the list of repairers of that insurance company.
The wheel support part i was referring to is the wheel flange.

Re: Rear wheel side play
Don't know what your country is so I'm not sure if your dealer is an independent who just happens to sell BMW bikes. The item you mention is also known as a spacer and is bolted solidly to the rear hub. If that had been damaged the wheel would have wobbled. Find another dealer for a second opinion. Just ask them to comment on the play. Don't tell them the history.

Re: Rear wheel side play
Rear wheel play came up as an advisory on my MOT so I did the rear bearings and hey presto no more play on the wheel.

Any chance of an up-date JMC. It would be interesting to know how you are getting on.

Hi,
First of all, tank you all for the advice.
The repair was finished and I already picked up the motorcycle from the BMW dealer but I'm not happy with the final result of the repair.
Everything in the rear is new, the wheel, the flange, the brake disc and the differential.
The wheel and the shaft that connects to the differential are tracking straight, without any discernible woobling, and there is no vibration under braking.
However, when looking closely to the brake disc and to the brake caliper while the wheel is spinning, I can still see the brake disc wooble about 2mm on the top and the brake caliper follow that movement.
BMW dealer says that this is normal in these motorcycles, all parts were changed to new ones and that there aren't any other parts that could be swap to eliminate that woobling.
After having the motorcycle examined by independent mechanics, they believe that the problem is the new brake disc, which may have come from factory already warped.
Next monday I'll have the brake disc disassembled and taken to a specialist for measurement to confirm the diagnostic.
Will let you know of the verdict after.
Best regards to everyone.

Re: Rear wheel side play
Having been in a similar position with front discs on another bike, there is a tolerance within which a disc is deemed warped or not. The disc I had the issue with was within this tolerance, but luckily the company changed the disc, but they could have just said no! Good luck

I had a similar problem with a 1200 GS a few years back. I could feel a pulsating through the brake pedal and a disc runout check with an engineering dial gauge showed a disc runout of about a millimetre.BMW replaced the disc under warranty. Good luck.
