Dog Walkers v. Cyclists

Hope I don't get slagged off for slightly widening the base for discussion but here goes and I'm a big (meaning grown up) lad now anyway.

We are blessed in my locality with an abundance of Country Parks and Multi-use trails, a legacy of our coal mining history. Now although there is some underlying resentment with a few dog walkers and a few cyclists, there are rarely any overt issues.
Now I use the trails in both capacities and when on my  MTB I observe the same rules as I do on the RT ie potential hazard, adjust speed, safe braking distance etc. When out with the dog, she is usually off the lead, ahead of or behind me, sniffing and grubbing around.
The other day, out with the dog, she's slightly ahead and this couple in their thirties come hammering down the track. The female shows and voices her displeasure at having to slow down to avoid collision with my dog who admittedly wandered into her path.

'Wouldn't hurt to slow down a bit' I said.

'Dog should be on a lead' she replied.

Ff.........................'So should you' was my eventual response, and we carried along our respective paths.

Now there must be many dog walkers and cyclists within our ranks and your comments and opinions would be welcome.

The opinion that both the above are a waste of time and should get out more on the RT, although having merit, is irrelevant, thank you.

Don't cycle but do walk the dog a lot. So think each needs to respect the others. If I see a cyclist coming I'll grab my dog just in case he gets run over. But if a cyclist is coming and they see a dog, I would expect them to also respect me and slow down. But as always you get idiots in all walks of life and activities  8)

"get a bigger, fiercer dog" is quite a good solution really, I have 3 dogs, two terriers (jack Russell & border) and a Rottweiler, I find that when I'm out with the rotty on his own people and cyclists tend to give you a wide berth even though the Jack Russell is the original tyre chasing breed

Very mild mannered I am, but have no time for the arrogant few who seem to think the trails are there for their exclusive use and the rest of us are an inconvenience they are obliged to put up with.

Agreed! As Casbar said above, It's all about having a mutual respect for other peoples hobbies and activity's and taking them in to consideration while persuing your own. What dog do you have by the way? and does it have a BMW badge on it

She's a little collie cross about 11 yrs old now. Will have to check the parts catalogue to see if they do doggy paraphernalia.

Always good to know but Wunderlich although good stuff isn't official BMW with the roundel so I'm not sure my dog would settle for that. She's a bit fussier than me. Any old tat, even homemade, will do for me.  8)
