First flat!

This was not the way I wanted this day to start.  Luckily I carry plugs and the nail was in a good location, in terms of repairing it.  Made it home safely, now I guess I'll take the wheel in and have it inspected and permanently patched from the inside.  Figure these tires have a couple thousand miles left in them.

I always get the TPS warning once made it home on a tyre repaired 4 times, 2 up and loaded for touring!

Yes, the dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree, first the normal tpms warning light, then yellow triangle, followed shortly by flashing red triangle.  It all happened within 30 seconds, was losing air fast.  Luckily it happened near a fuel station.  I used my own plugs, but their compressed air.  I had CO2 cartridges and a pump with me, but that would have taken longer.


That nail is used for temporarily attaching lumber in construction.  They seat the nail only to the first collar, and then can pull it easily later.  When it sunk into my tire it went in all the way to the second collar.  I couldn't figure out why it was so hard to pull out, until I saw what type of nail it was.

You might have fun getting the tyre permanently repaired.  DOT state Z rated tyres should be replaced if punctured as do some manufacturers. Many garages wont  do them.  But I know lots had had them plugged.  I never do, your life depends on you tyres.

My buddy picked up a new RT last year, on his ride home, picked up a piece of rebar in rear tire
Went from normal pressure to zero in 30 seconds, caution then red
Tire had 15 miles on it, he did not have MOA platinum insurance, bummer
For my money TPMS is a must

+1 on the TPMS.  I was in the last bit of civilization on the way to the coast, and 40 miles of twisty mountain roads ahead of me.  Had I not detected that leak before I left, it would have been a much larger problem.  And @RTMan, you may be right about the tire.  So far nobody willing to patch it for me, might just end up buying a new set.  My biggest problem now is that I'm in an advanced rider training course Monday and I can't get this all done by then.  Might end up riding on the plugged tire for the class.

Shop determined that tire is not repairable.  Have 2 new PR4s on order and hoping to get the bike back online by next weekend.

I had the same issue with a wood screw through the centre of the tread on a rear wheel Metzler Roadtech 01 that had been on the bike for 2K miles. I took it to my local tyre centre to be told that, 'they can't be plugged but we'll sell you a new one sir'.


I then took it to a guy I've know for years who specialises in bike tyre. He fixed it with a mushroom plug - no reservations at all. I've since done another 2K in northern Spain on that tyre.


I just may replace it a little earlier but I'm bot worried that it's going to delaminate or self destruct.

Should know but what does the Z rating actually mean? Good for 160mph?

I had a baby nail in my tire yesterday.  TPMS said my pressure was at 18 - I was 10 miles from home - took the back roads - pressure went up to 20psi on the ride.


Went and got myself a patch kit and we'll see how it goes (tires have only 3000 miles on them).

Z rated tires are good for 149+ mph.  At least according to the experts at google.

I think the tech would have patched it if I had insisted, but he strongly advised against it based on the wear pattern of the tires.  They already had 7500+ miles on them, so I was going to squeak maybe another 1000-1500 miles out of them.  I'm about ready to head out on a tour of Yellowstone national park, so I decided to just bite the bullet and replace.
