Headset audio volume distorted across different sources

I paired my headset to the my brand new (to me) 2013 r1200rt which has the audio package.  No problem pairing.


The USB memory stick plays clear as a bell at any headset volume, but is very quiet through the bike speakers
The radio and Sirrius xm sources are totally distorted at any column in the headset but sound great through the bike speakers


The volume wheel work fine when playing through the bike speakers but doesn't work through the headset, although the left and right toggle functions does.


Can anyone help me figure out what I'm missing.

There seems to be some documentation about this online, but it deals with a software update that seems to sort of fix the FM/Sirius issue but blows out the GPS, so I am wondering if anyone has had this issue and any luck correcting it.
