Thanks for all the input and comments so far folks.
I will be popping down to Cannon or Wollaston Motorrad when I'm home again in November and dragging SWMBO down for a pillion ride. That will give her a chance to try some of the worst weather we get and whether it'll give her the comfort she needs.
The only real world thing I didn't like about the R1200RT was that the engine left me 'cold' ... not literally, but I didn't engage with it. Maybe a longer ride will change that.

like most twins, the RT engine "thumps along". it certainly is not as smooth as a four cylinder engine, but it does have some character

I have a Thruxton R, so the whole twin thing ( although they're different twins I grant you ) wasn't the issue as such. The biggest advantage of the RT is it's so versatile. You can commute on it, go touring, or sunday rides, it's even not too bad in heavy city traffic, certainly better than the Tiger 955i I used to have.

Like others I've recently come from K1600GTLE.
The K16 is an easy comfortable ride which will hold its own in the twisties. Very smooth engine with immense power and torque. Loads of room for a pillion. A lot of bike and weight, things wear out fast. Drive train back-lash unacceptable. Very heavy to move around, reverse essential. Heavy, but low seat and low centre of gravity mean is easy to get feet down (my inside leg is 28"). All the bells and whistles.
R1200SE LC accelerates almost as fast as the K16 as less weight, top speed much less, but where can you use it? Ride quality not as comfy as the K16, but not the end of the world. Engine sound, power delivery, paddling around and fun to ride the RT wins hands down. Easy to service too. Test ride one, unless you hate boxers you'll love it.

I shall definitely be taking one out again. As I say, I've never ridden a GT, but I would think unless you want the extra top speed (and where can you use this? hardly anywhere), go for the RT. But I am biased.
