No matter where I'm going, getting there on two wheels is always best.

AW is the BMW workshop unit used to calculate the labour cost for each service item, based on an AW of 12.00 for 1 hour.DonVulpes wrote:Can anyone tell me what AW stands for?
On the service invoice, each maintenance item has an AW to work out the labour cost.
For example, with an hourly labour rate of £87.25 + VAT @ 20%, changing brake fluid, rear brakes has an AW of 2 / 12 x £87.25 = £14.54 + VAT.

Re: 2012 Twin Cam - Service Costs
Hi, this might seem a silly question, when you do the service yourself what happens to the service book? It seems a lot of weight is put on this when reselling.
thanks and regards, Ganesh

Re: 2012 Twin Cam - Service Costs
On this occasion, the service wasn't completely done by myself, a BMW dealer did some bespoke service items, which resulted in the service book being stamped.Ganesh wrote:When you do the service yourself what happens to the service book? It seems a lot of weight is put on this when reselling.
On a previous 2010 RT which was part-ex'd for my present 2012 model, it had some independent (non-BMW dealer) service stamps in the book.
Because the service book was stamped up to date, the BMW dealer wasn't bothered & gave me a good price, based on it's condition & service history.

Re: 2012 Twin Cam - Service Costs
My most recent DIY/BMW service was at 21,500 miles, I did it as if the bike had done 24,000 miles & was 5 years old, therefore, it's a 12,000 miles plus annual service.
The following work was completed.
Oil change, engine, with filter (BMW)
Checking valve clearance (DIY)
Gearbox-oil change (DIY)
Replace all spark plugs (DIY)
Replace air filter cartridge (DIY)
Changing brake fluid, front & rear brakes (BMW)
Correcting engine synchronization (BMW)
The total cost of parts, plus BMW labour was £248.

Placed another order with OPIE Oils, they "Price Matched" this from 123spareparts, https://www.123spareparts.co.uk/engine- ... /p-OIL-300
Ended up paying £38 (inc. P&P) for 4 litres of Castrol Power 1 4T Racing 10w-50 engine oil.

Re: 2012 Twin Cam - Service Costs
This is the 00 00 111 BMW Service Maintenance Schedule for a Twin Cam.
Looking back at my last service invoice etc., this is the "full monty" service. BMW deselected the items not required at the particular time/mileage interval and/or those items I choose to do myself. My RT is due an annual service, which is effectively an engine oil & filter change. Other items are just visual, plus, reading the fault memory, re-setting the service due date/mileage and stamping the service book.
I've negotiated a cost of £60 for labour only, parts (oil & filter) will be supplied by myself.

The objective is to maintain the T&C's of the BMW Motorrad Insured Warranty at the least cost to myself, whilst also having a service history, i.e. stamp in the book.Sullivj wrote:Why pay them £60 for an oil and filter change.

Fair enough David.
Your recent calliper replacement, proves that the warranty is worth having. That said, I don't have it on mine, or any of my bikes.

David I recently used this company https://www.broughtonlubricants.co.uk/c ... -4t-10w-50 if you buy 12 litres works out cheaper. I bought 12 litres of 5W-40 for my LC bike cost £104.59 including delivery works out as £8.72 / litre

Morris Lubricants do a Super Sport V Twin 10w-50 Full-Synthetic Motorcycle Oil, https://www.morrislubricantsonline.co.u ... e-oil.html
Can get it at a trade price of £35.36 for 4 litres, that's £8.84 per litre.

Re: 2012 Twin Cam - Service Costs
In October 2020, my 2012 Camhead will be due a service. Decided to order some oil & a filter from Wemoto.
Have gone for Motorex Boxer oil at £9.60 per litre, https://www.wemoto.com/bikes/bmw/r_1200 ... 50_1_litre
plus a Hiflo oil filter at £6.26 https://www.wemoto.com/bikes/bmw/r_1200 ... lter_hiflo
The bike will have a bespoke service at a BMW dealer. So far have got quotes for the following work, engine oil change with filter (labour only), replace belt for generator, changing brake fluid F&R and correcting engine synchronisation. Allan Jefferies have come up with £190.98, whilst Cooper at Sunderland want £237.74 for the same work, that's a difference of £46.76. Waiting for a reply from Barrie Robson at York.

You might get a better price & job if you have the "alternator" belt changed.
The GS 'is' the better bike :-)
