Re: new 2017 R1200RT Battery charging
After reading this thread, I'm trying to figure out if my Optimate4 is the BMW edition. It is model TM245. Is that the BMW version? Can't seem to confirm this with a google search.

Re: new 2017 R1200RT Battery charging
I bought an Optimate 4 when I got my '14 RT. It was plugged into the auxiliary socket after every ride for 2 years. No problem at all. It has been doing the same thing on my '16 MY17 RT for a year, again with out any trouble.
Vini, Vidi, Velcro....... I came, I saw, I stuck around.

You must have a different model no. due to UK plug my TM245 has a USA plug molded in. I'm pretty sure the TM245 is the right model after more research but other info is conflicting.

Think yours is ok. If you search your model number it shows Canbus ready. You should be able to switch modes from standard to Canbus, so if you can do that then I think your probably right, different model numbers for different markets

+1 from me. I got the Optimate 4 at a good price and sold the old Optimate (3 I think) on eBay for good money too. Works a treat.Casbar wrote: Glad I have an Optimate 4, had it a year now with no ill effects.

I have a Oxford Max 3800 which I connect up to the battery with the connector cable. Had no problem with it so far, checks the battery strength as well as providing a trickle charge if needed. As the bike gets out quite frequently I only plug-in if it hasn't been out for more than a week, especially as the weather gets colder.
thanks and regards, Ganesh

I have used my BMW can bus charger now for over a year, and it is always plugged into the accessory socket it is designed for. Zero problems thus far on my '15 rt. So, I am not dissing others who choose a non-BMW charger; I am simply testifying that, for me personally, this is the best charger-maintainer I have ever owned (and I have several). I still think it is well worth the money. JMHO. GLTA.

But its not made by BMW its a charger that is the same as others mentioned on here, but rebadged by BMW. Its made in China, not Germany. So realistically its no better than Cetek or Optimate, its the same technology and box. But you pay for the BMW logo, but if that makes it better, then I've obviously got an inferior model
I've been using Optimate chargers for over 15 years with no issues, battery conditioning is not Rocket science.

Re: new 2017 R1200RT Battery charging
My BMW charger is a permanent fixture at the moment and is performing fine, it's designed to do this. I paid £90 for it and I can't really see the point of saving 20/30 quid to avoid it, unless you already own a different one from another bike.
Re: new 2017 R1200RT Battery charging
I would rather save 20 -30 pounds than buy a branded item which is no better than the cheaper version, just because it has a BMW roundel on it. But that sums up the brand. There was also a thread on UKGSER where a chap used the said BMW charger and it closed down due to the Canbus and proper shagged his battery. But each to their own.
I don't own any BMW branded underwear either 8)
