What type of Sealant?

Post by Toaster »

Hi Guys,

For anyone who has had their Final Drive apart on a  R1200RT Wethead, what type of sealant did you use to reseal the rubber boot located forward of the final drive? I'm told its supposed to be a silicon based sealant but I'm not sure what type to use.

Cheers

A "Google Search" seems to reveal that BMW use Staburags NBU 30 PTM grease to lubricate the boots.

Hi David,

After doing a search of this grease (to see where I might get it) it appears its an assembly grease and this is actually what BMW use on the splines of the transmission shaft (according to a couple of websites). The remains of the sealant that is currently on the edges of my rubber boot is similar to a plumbers sealant. Its white and very thick almost like putty. As you mentioned to me before about using a silicone based sealant....I was thinking perhaps of getting some plumbers sealant (some of which is also silicone based).

Cheers

A non-acid cure silicon would be a reasonable bet.
Like they use for metal guttering, etc, shouldn't cause corrosion of the cast housing and its finnish.
