If I can add to the confusion here...
I had my GPS connected directly to the battery, just
as the instructions suggests. Always remove the unit
from the cradle when not in use, even in my garage.
Always covered the contact points with the little rubber
cap provided. I noticed the battery going down if not
ridden every day. Bought a brand new, top of the line
battery. Being end of season and not riding much, battery
was dead by spring. (had a trickle charger on, but apparently
that didn't work as intended!) Guessing that I have charging
problems, took it to the dealer. It was the GPS cable that was
draining the batteries. Without the unit on, as I mentioned!
Bought a new cable, and had the same issue. Now I have it
connected to a key activated source and all is good.

My Autocom is wired to the continues live feed in the plug for the top box the terminal is live all the time even with the ignition switched off (I assume it is for the top box interior light), I like it like this so i can talk to my pillion with the ignition off, it comes in handy in garages etc when I can tell them I am ready for them to dismount/mount and they don't take me by surprise and make me loose my balance with the possible result ending up on the floor with the bike, It's also handy when you stop to take in a scenic view and can continue to talk without the engine running or the ignition on with lights etc dazzling after dark. I don't have to worry about draining the battery as when mentioned the Autocom unit powers off when you unplug your headset.

The battery charger is bolted directly to the battery, therefore, no issues with the rear accessory socket.
Alternatively, use the front accessory socket for the battery charger.

Ha!! I was having the same issue with my previous bike (2013 Victory Cross Country) and went trough two batteries until I remove the whole GPS setup. I was having it connected directly to the battery but it was always in the cradle. I assume if the GPS device was off no current draining but I was totally wrong. Not sure if re-installing the GPS unit on the R1200RT. Google Maps works much better that the GPS.

Loose connector is for “keyed” power to GPS/cell phone etc
The other half of connector can be had on amazon or at your dealer
On my 1200gs I used it for my GPS
If your looking for power for a USB why not add a fused powerlet plug
On one of the upper panels, you have several options with either a DIN or cigarette connector
I would recommend the 24in Cable’s as it gives you some extra room reach
