The Three Greases

Post by David. »

Reading the Haynes manual with respect to the final drive unit to swinging arm pivot bearings, it refers to "three greases".

Molybdenum disulphide grease for the splined end of the bevel gear.

Grease for pivot sleeve & pivot pin.

Silicone grease for both ends of the rubber coupling boot.

Any help and/or advice on selecting the correct grease for each application would be appreciated, thanks.

I used Honda 60% moly assembly paste (or equivalent 60%) on the splines of the shaft as it's recommended for high pressure applications. I used white silicone grease from a plumbers merchants for the rubber boot as they're all the same. I'm not sure on the pivot sleeve & pin? I'd probably use a high temp general purpose grease.

Like Simbo, I too use Honda Moly 60 Paste on the Shaft Splines. You are welcome to help yourself to a squirt or two when you get around to doing the job.

Thanks Mike, as discussed, will get a second opinion on the pivot bearings by getting the bike MOT'd at a BMW Dealer in April 2018.

A little moly paste goes a long way, be sure to wear latex gloves when you're applying it too, it's very messy stuff 👍

I used moly grease on the splines, a general purpose grease on the pivot pin, rubber grease on the end of the rubber boot.
