Over the Cat and Fiddle

Post by Paggers »

Casual ride today up the Cat and Fiddle with another rider on an '05 GS. Video below shows the section from Macclesfield to the Cat and Fiddle pub. Weather was a bit dull but it was a good ride - continued on to Buxton then back via High Peak and Whaley Bridge.

Great road! I was over there with the good lady the other week, Shame the pubs shut down! Still stopped there for a brew out of the flask though  :)
The GS 'is' the better bike :-)

I went over to Nottingham yesterday, following the scenic route which includes the Cat & Fiddle. What a difference a day makes, it was raining with water running across the road. I had the unpleasant experience of the bike letting go mid-corner on one of the tight bends - fortunately it gripped again an instant later and I was able to make it round the bend, just missing the kerb! Certainly got my attention and I backed off even further. The incident was recorded on camera so it will make it into my next video - I'll post up a link when it's available so you can all have a good chuckle at me sweet-talking the bike to make it round the bend.

Paggers did you use rain mode, as I have never had reason to use it yet and wondered if is useful or not?

I did not use rain mode, although in hindsight perhaps I should have. I use the mode a lot more in the winter, I guess this was the first really bad day I have ridden in for a few months so my brain wasn't in the right track.

For those who are interested below is the video from Monday's trip - the first segment is me almost high-siding on one of the tighter bends of the Cat & Fiddle. Definitely not something I want to do again!

Nice video, looked like a nasty slide. Do you have any idea what caused it? Was it something on the road or just excessive water. What tyres do you use? I had a similar experience recently on a small country road in Snowdonia when I came round a corner and ran over a cowpat which caused the front to slide and made me run up against the hedge but just about got away with it. I'm using Metzeler Roadtecs which seem very good in all conditions.

I honestly think I just went into the corner too fast for the conditions. It's a fairly tight bend and my first warning was when the side of my boot scraped the tarmac, indicating that I was cranked over quite a bit further than I had planned - a moment later the traction let go. The tyres are Michelin PR4 GT with less than 2k on them but given the road conditions they would have been pretty cold so I can't really blame them.

What I find interesting is that the traction control never kicked in (at least the light never went on) so the slip must have been very brief in order for the rear not to have tried to spin up. So I think it's entirely plausible that there was a small puddle or something like that which kicked the rear out.

All in I think I was pretty lucky. As the video shows there was a dry stone wall on the outside of the bend at the exact point where I would have been thrown had the bike hit the kerb - with a good chance that the bike would have then followed me into it. It was a good reminder to respect the conditions.

I don't think it was power that caused the slide  hence the TRC not cutting in.  Looks like you were apexing a little early and probably crosses some oil in the centre of the lane  and the back wheel let go. Difficult to say exactly from the video but there appears to be several black marks on the centre  double whites  so maybe someone coming the other way had taken it a little fast braked and slopped some fuel,
