Had a test ride.
Nice bike and, if I was even just 30 years younger, I wouldn't be saying it was too fast (for me) and has too little weather protection. My wife might also consider getting on the back of it if she was at least 30 years younger too.
Go to a dealer, take a test ride. I can understand why some people might love them.

I have a good friend 78 years young who rides the heck out of his, I know he added bar risers and changed the pegs

I took one on an extended test ride (100 miles) and it was very fast and revvy (160bhp) which is fine for a short blast. Didn't come across as the sort of power you'd need for long distance fully loaded touring. Also a lot of high frequency vibration through the handlebars. Much prefer my RT LC.

Great fun to ride, lively engine and looks good IMHO! Let down though by a really annoying vibration through the handlebar grips at 70ish mph! .

Cycle world did a nice comparison between the s1000xr and the Ducati multistrada. The s1000 blew the doors off the Ducati on the track but the Ducati did much better on the trails because of suspension travel and it was nicer for the touring segment. More comfortable, better wind protection.
