2016 Pannier Lock Won't Open?

Hi All


My November 2016 RT (2017 model) right pannier won't open with the normal method of pushing the opening button downwards whilst attached to the bike?
I am however able to open it after I detach the pannier from the bike? ??? ?
The pannier is empty and is therefore not being obstructed internally.
I note there are a lot of issues being reported with the opening function of pannier mechanisms.
Can anyone confirm that BMW have acknowledged issues and have a solution for this problem?


Whilst my bike is still under warranty I wanted to hear from other affected owners before I approach BMW?

Is it the central locking model?
I had a problem with as yourself with it not unlocking or opening while on the bike, it turned out to be the pannier wasn't fully sitting on the rear peg.


Cleaned the slight build up of debris from the locating pegs and refitted 'firmly' and has been perfect since.

Thank you for your prompt reply.My bike does not have central locking.


I'll examine the rear peg that the pannier rests on. As the bike is like new and is spotless 2,500 miles I don't believe there is dirt in this area.

Are you sure your bike does not have central locking???  I thought it was standard on the more recent bikes

I am pretty sure that my bike doesn't have central locking. Its the base model with certain extras specified by the previous owner.
Recently the right hand pannier was opening without issue when I used the key and pushed the button downwards. The left hand one on the other side works fine.
I'll double check central locking and revert back.
Presently my only way of opening the right hand pannier is to release the pannier and remove it from the bike and then push the button downwards and then the pannier opens.
The pannier is spotlessly clean throughout as are the lugs on the bike which it hooks onto.
I may have to ask the BMW dealer to resolve this issue under warranty.

My bike definitely does not have central locking.
The left hand pannier behaves exactly as expected but the right hand pannier will only open when off the bike!
I’ll refer this to the local BMW dealer.
