Hi,
I've been looking at the top box for the 2014 onwards RT and it only seems to be available in white aluminium (according to the accessories brochure) yet I've seen plenty of these colour matched to the bike. Can you buy them in different colours or do you have to ask BMW or 3rd party to paint them? If it's the latter what sort of cost is involved?
Also, I have seen photos with a second backrest pad that sits higher, similar to that on the K1600GT, is this an aftermarket product or are people using the K1600 top box on the RT?
Cheers, Toby

Re: Top Box colour and pads query
Hi Toby,
ready-painted topboxes are available in some K1600 colours and for the current R1200RT colours (Carbon Black, Mars Red, Alpine White), but they are expensive from BMW (there's a surprise!). Colour-matched lids are also available, but again, they're expensive.
See here on the Bohling und Eisele discount shop:
https://www.bmw-motorrad-bohling.com/uk ... 0&limit=30
The colour-matched boxes are on pages 2 and 3.
I think that the 'regular' K1600 box is the same as the RT box. The K1600GTL box has the high backrest.
Here are some part numbers:
Touring topcase BLUE-PLANET 46 54 8 393 199
Touring topcase SPARKLINGSTORM 46 54 8 393 200
Touring topcase CARBON-BLACK 46 54 8 405 348
Topcase Light white-aluminium 77 43 8 544 630
Touring topcase ALPINE-WHITE 77 43 8 555 73
Touring topcase MARSRED MET. 77 43 8 565
Topcase Lids only:
Alpine White 77438888749
Carbon Black 4654805347
Sparkling Storm 46548393077
Blue Planet 46548393076
Mars Red 46548565885
However, I had a car-body painter friend paint my lid for me. It cost a lot less than buying the correct colour-matched lid from BMW. He charged me less than £50. I was happy to pay this and gave him a case of beer for his trouble.
The lid, brakelight assembly and backrest pad are easy to remove and re-fit.
Hope this helps.

Re: Top Box colour and pads query
Yes, I bought this 49 litre BMW top box (silver more than the claimed white colour) from this German internet company. Granted, they’re not cheap, but they are nicely engineered, and the box was delivered to my home address here in the UK without fuss or delay, and suitably packed in bubble wrap inside a girt big cardboard box! I matched the coded lock to my ignition key without any real problems (having watched a helpful YouTube tutorial), and hey presto.
Last year, having had this top box for approx 18 mths, I found one of the moulded plastic lugs/tongues that hook under the rack when installed, cracked. Following discussions with my dealer (realising this box is OEM kit and therefore has 24 mths warranty) and showing them the physical damage, BMW Munich sanctioned a replacement new top box. Great customer service and prompt service from both BMW Munich and my dealer.

Re: Top Box colour and pads query
I purchased the deluxe top case online from KFM motorraeder for less than half of what the dealer was asking. I painted it myself with color matched paint from Colorite (a U.S. company), including clear coat. It's not a perfect paint job if you look closely, since I didn't bother wet sanding the orange peel. But to just look at the bike, you would never notice. I think I paid about $60 for all the paint and clear coat.
Good luck with it.
Good luck with it.

Thanks, I'm not sure I'd trust myself with the paint job thoughtimminator wrote: I purchased the deluxe top case online from KFM motorraeder for less than half of what the dealer was asking.
