transmission sight glass?

Post by raider57 »

I just noticed a smaller oil sight glass aft of the engine oil glass on the left side. It's not mentioned my owners manual. Is this a transmission oil glass? aftermarket perhaps?

Wunderlich did/do a sight glass that replaced one of the gearbox metal plugs - could be one of them that a previous owner's fitted.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I didn't think I had transmission oil that was separate from the engine oil?  Is this a pre-LC thing?  I ride a 2016 RT.

2016 model has a wet clutch, the OP's bike is a 2012 with a dry one. The GS got the wet one, I think, in 2013, the RT a bit later.

If a transmission oil sight glass was fitted as in the video, this would be on the RHS of the bike. Plus, it wouldn't be seen without removing the lower fairing panel.

Yes, the trans oil glass is in fact on the right side.  You can see it between the panels by looking towards the rear and slightly downwards. The previous owner must have installed it. I think it's actually a nice feature for a quick trans level check.
Hopefully it removes easily when fluid change time comes, and not sure what type of seal/gasket is used.

I'd expect the gasket ring to be the same as that required for the OEM plug, 18 x 22.
