Hi all,
I'm looking at getting my 16plate RT serviced soon when the weather gets better and am in 2 minds where to get it done....
On all my other bikes I have had all my work done at Doncaster motorcycles never had a problem with them and they do a good job but is it better to have a BMW dealer do the service instead and if so what does everyone think to Barrie Robson in york?
Any advice/thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

My 16 plate RT is in rainbow rotherham for 24k service and mot next week £408 .Bit dear but the dealer stamp is worth it on trade ins. Plus they up date every thing that is needed

Oddly, I have not found that to be the case (if we are talking about 'trade-in') on a bike with any decent miles on it. I get the same response...a sharp intake of breath, a head shake and a comment like: "Well, sorry sir, with all those miles on it, we will have to part it through the trade"!
It may be more true for a private sale, although, I have always found a good clear paper trail of you own receipts, records, MOT certificates etc to be just as convincing [size=2px] [/size][size=2px]that you were a genuine, responsible and caring owner to the prospective buyer.[/size]

The Workshop at York is an independent BMW specialist, http://www.theworkshopyork.com/, being VAT registered, they can uphold the T&C's of a BMW warranty. Plus, their hourly labour rate is around half that of a BMW dealer.

The last RT I part ex'd had both BMW & independent service stamps in the book. AJ's weren't bothered, the bike had higher than average miles for it's year, they still gave me a trade in value based on the condition of the bike. The bike was then sold by AJ's from their BMW dealership, not passed on to a trader.

Likewise, the first RT I part ex'd at BR in York had higher than average miles for it's year, with both BMW dealer & independent service stamps in the book. Again, the bike was sold by BR York from their BMW dealership.

Ji use Graham’s in Bradford. Independent BMW trained mechanic. May be a bit nearer than York.

That does seem a bargain when you consider there is at least half an hour's work removing and re-fitting the fairing panels.

Don't they check the coolant then on a 12k service, my dealer certainly removed at least one of my panels, because they managed to break the tab off and then stuck my panel back on with silicon. But by the time I got home the panel was moving, so I took it off and sent them photos. They agreed to replace the panel if I couldn't fix it to my satisfaction. I did fix it with new tabs.

For a 12000 mile service, the panels would need to come off to check / replace the air filter.


My comment was aimed at the synchronisation which is done via the diagnostics port.


The coolant can be checked by looking in the righthand side of the fairing, there is a small viewport to see the tank level.

That is indeed interesting, modern technology never does cease to amaze. I would however be interested to hear how any adjustments are actually carried out ?.

I should imagine they'll be adjusted by the ECU to keep the fuelling within the parameters of the various sensors of the engine? There doesn't seem to be any sort of way of reading or adjusting later ride by wire throttle's manually like on the cabled versions? maybe they never need adjusting again? I'm sure they'll alter over time with valve/cam wear, but as long as the valve to cam ratio's are within tolerance it'll be within the scope of the ECU to make the necessary adjustments.. I've got a headache now just thinking about it :-(.. I think I'll go and remove my Suzuki's secondary throttle valve's to regain control of my right wrists actions before Arnie comes knocking on the front door with his Red Eye saying "I'm be Back".. The end is nigh.


ps. anyone else have a better theory? anyone have a 2013 gs-911 to confirm the settings of the throttle body sync?


pps. I wonder if the main dealer servicing costs will be cheaper due to not needing to check/adjust these things manually?
The GS 'is' the better bike :-)

It is all via the TB stepper motor, so you don't need to get in there with manometers and the like.

It self assesses and makes corrections all the time.

Haha, NO. They still charge a huge amount to plug their kit into your bike. That one action is expensive. I guess the software needs to be paid for. The hardware is relatively cheep.


And in terms of the GS911, I am pretty sure it covers that parameter (TB checking).

And in terms of the GS911, I am pretty sure it covers that parameter (TB checking).

I dont think the software is that expensive. I have VCDS Diagnostic software for my Tiguan. Some independants use it as its very comprehensive. It was less than £300. Its just another money maker for BMW dealers.
