Hello Guys,
I am going to get the wheels on my 2012 R1200RT powder coated, and for this reason I need to remove the front wheel bearings.
Is it possible to knock them out the traditional way with a drift and hammer or is a bearing puller tool required?. The reason I ask is that I have read that the spacer that sits between the bearings cant be dislodged to expose the edge of the race thus requiring the bearing puller, can any of you guys confirm this or can I get at it with a drift?
Chris...

The Haynes manual says that the drift method can be used as an alternative if a bearing puller is not available. Having seen similar wheel bearings being removed with a drift, displacing the spacer between the bearings sufficiently can be troublesome, but not impossible.
A bearing remover collet is available for less than £15 plus P&P, https://www.amp-starters.co.uk/Sealey-M ... gL1LPD_BwE

David,
Thanks very much for the helpful reply, I was going to purchase a Sealey bearing puller set costing £55 as I couldnt find anywhere that sold single collets. I can now purchase just the 25mm one from the link you provided ;D ......

If you haven't got a suitable drift for use with the collet & a broad blade screwdriver doesn't work, cold chisels can be purchased relatively cheaply.
In the Sealey kit, the bearing removal drifts are 250mm & 400mm long, obviously, the blade/shaft would have to be less than 25mm.

You can use 'wrall bolts' to get wheel bearings out, they're only a couple of quid. Just get the relative diameter and tighten it up inside the bearing then drift it out from the opposite side. That's the cheapo method
The GS 'is' the better bike :-)
