2009 R1200RT - fitting Sat-Nav using the existing connector in the front harness
2009 R1200RT - fitting Sat-Nav using the existing connector in the front harness
Hi Folks - I intend to power a Sat-Nav via the exixting connector in the harness at the front of the bike. I`m assured it will be in there somewhere, but i`m not sure what I`m looking for. Please could someone post a pic of the harness and spare connector. I don`t want to dive in there and pull out the wrong piece of harness, resulting in mucho costo !!

This photograph shows 3 sockets, (may be different on a bike with Audio) but the power socket is the top one.
Sockets with caps in place & cable tied to framework.

Hey thanks, that’s just what I needed. Mine appears to have just the power socket, but the cap is in place and I couldn’t get it off. Now I know for sure I’ll wrag it off somehow using pliers or such.

And risk damaging the plug.BBT600 wrote:The cap is in place and I couldn’t get it off. Now I know for sure I’ll wrag it off somehow using pliers or such.

Hi I asked my BMW dealer to rig up my Zumo 395 GPS to the canbus system when it was in for a service. The mechanic said that every time they tried to start up the bike with the Zumo connected the system failed. The solution is a direct wiring to the batter. Works fine!

That's what they suggested doing for my TomTom on my oil cooled RT - but they warned don't leave the GPS on the bike for too long when not running as it is a continuous drain, although I suspect we would have to be talking days so they were just being over cautious

I gave up with the dedicated connector on my '06 RT, it just wouldn't work! In the end, I wired straight to the battery with a fused and switchable lead - some of the Garmin mounts do put a small drain on the battery, even with no unit fitted, so I simply switch the connection off when I park up...if I remember!

Of course I should have added that every time I park the bike (even for coffee) the GPS is taken off the mount, switched off and goes into my pocket. When I put it back on the mount the GPS switches back on automatically and the route is still active.

It might be worth using a multimeter to check the battery drain when the GPS unit's removed - I can't remember my readings, but suffice to say that if I left the bike parked up, Zumo not connected but the mount still 'live', the battery was flat after a week....and that's a new-ish, healthy battery. My Zumo is an old 400, it may be that later mounts don't draw any power at all till a unit's dropped into place. It's a very rare thing though for my bike to be parked up or unused for a week, if it is, it's on the CTEK charger - but I suppose if I was away on holiday, the drain could've been an issue.Frank123 wrote: Of course I should have added that every time I park the bike (even for coffee) the GPS is taken off the mount, switched off and goes into my pocket. And in case it is helpful for anyone my TomTom mount did not draw any current unless the GPS was on it

I never take my tomtom off the bike and had no battery drain problems. Dave
