The cheapest thing on a BMW is the nut that connects the handlebars to the seat.

Looks like a led bulb and a load resistor to me. I've had great results with nighteye bulbs in one of my other (non canbus) bikes, their bulb/resistor combo is about 30 quid, but I'd be happy to spend the extra on something tried and tested...

Having the LEDs in a line will be closer to the original bulb but only from one angle it will not have the full 360 degrees of an incandescent bulb but still may not replicate the correct light pattern for a UK MOT. Also if you look at the before and after picture, there is an extra red glow on the left bar, makes me wonder if in the after picture they also have auxiliary lights on too. just a though
