Mirror cap removal

Anyone know how to get the mirror caps off a 2018 RT ive folded the mirrord and there seems to be a black string coming out of the mirror which ive got no idea what thats for but cant get the caps off
Ive just painted the wheels and top box to match abd thought the mirror caps colour coded would look nice as well

The string stops you losing the mirror back should you bang it against something on the move (personal experience). The mirror back slides back on horizontally and clicks into place.


Edit: took mine off and added some pictures.
Fold the mirror back, hold the mirror back at the hinge end and pull away from the hinge but also towards the outer most edge of the mirror, horizontally. So in the hand picture it is pulling towards the palm of your hand.
