Does anyone know what this missing fastener maybe?

Post by ichavis »

Wonder if someone can help here?  I have a 2014 R1200RT... on the left ,  front side,  when I remove the fairing panel i can see an air intake above the radiator,  there is some sort of fastner that is missing from that spot that attaches the air intake to the body,  it is not a regular screw as best as i can tell. .... I've attached 2 photos pointing to the spot.  I've pulled my hair out trying to look at different parts fiches but can't seem to find it.  anyone have any idea from the photos what this may be?  thanks in advance,  Ira

Hi Ira

Just had that side apart on my 2016 to fit some Denali lights.  The bracket uses the two screws you can see behind the air duct, so I removed the screw that you have missing while the bracket was fitted..  From memory it was a black Torx head screw.  I don't think it is the end of the world if it is missing, just leaves a small air gap.

You could buy a mushroom head stainless 5x12 mm screw and add a washer or you could get one from the dealer.

Flanged button head screws are available without going to a BMW dealer.

......................  Or you could have a look in your bolt/screw box In the garage and you may have one or a longer one you can cut down.

I wish BMW would ditch that unhelpful description (Fillister head). It really doesn't tell the end user much at all.

Fastener names are known by those who install them regularly. Aircraft owners dont always know about Jo Bolts and Hi-Loks

Now we know what Fillister Heads are.. Every day’s a school day.

But we don't, because fillister head screws in theory are like slotted domed cheesehead machine screws. However, BMW calls a variety of their bolts  'Fillister head' including  some Torx head,  Hexhead socket cap bolts, domed head trim screws etc. It is most unhelpful.
Here are a some examples:
