Just noticed rubber grommet on steering damper perished end above mudguard.haynes manual refer to it as damper. Two questions is it safe to ride. Also is it possible to remove without wheel and mudguard removed as suggested.

Is the self-locking nut #5 accessible between the fork leg mount and the mudguard.
An open ended spanner may not provide sufficient purchase.
And/or, is screw #4 accessible with the bars turned in either direction.

Perhaps this is why the Haynes manual refers to removing the wheel & mudguard.

Its 3 that split, bolt4 is located above mudguard. Turning handlebar not much diffrence, looking at picture it may clear mudguard if I can get it undone as not a lot of clearance. Cheers David what is part called/ number.

This video shows how to replace the stock BMW steering damper on a GS, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9G8wXLsckuA same damper on RT.

Is the stock steering damper adjustable.
