What rules do you apply to your oil level checking ritual??
Centre stand? warm engine? Side Stand? hand stand?????
There are so many variables on google and as I am new to this boxer engine, I would like to hear your views.. :D
How do you check your oil???
Re: How do you check your oil???
Always use the centre stand but make sure the ground is level. If its leaning left or right by just a bit you will get an incorrect reading. Think the book tells you to check it when hot but switched off for a few seconds. Window is normally empty when the engine is running.

Sometimes handy carrying a small LED torch or similar.
Love my family almost as much as my 90th anniversary RT

From the Rider's Manual
The oil level varies with
the temperature of the
oil. The higher the temperature,
the higher the level of oil in the
sump. Checking the oil level with
the engine cold or after no more
than a short ride will lead to misinterpretation
of oil level.
In order to ensure that the engine
oil level is read correctly,
check the oil level only after at
engine operating temperature.
Switch off the engine when it is
at operating temperature.
Make sure the ground is level
and firm and place the motorcycle
on its centre stand.
Wait five minutes for the oil to
drain into the oil pan.
Knowing that the oil level will rise when the engine gets hot, I like to check it at home from cold before a ride, seeing the oil near the top of the sight glass.
(The difference between MIN and MAX is 0.5 litre.)
As mentioned, a small torch can be helpful when checking the oil level.
