Moving from 2013 Yamaha FJR1300A to BMW RT

I am trying to find out overall differences in maintenance cost. Most frequently occurring challenges.  My FJR has been flawless. What is typical annual cost at 10,00o miles/year.  I think tires are the same needs.

The costs are based on doing 6,000 miles per year. If you take the 3 years/18,000 miles or 5 years/30,000 miles costs and divide them by 2 or 3 respectively based on the mileage, the average cost per 10,000 miles is around £400 per year.

That's interesting David, I seem to remember reading somewhere that the average annual mileage for a bike was around half of that at 3,000 miles.

The BMW service package will be priced around the service intervals of every 12 months or 6,000 miles, whichever comes first.

$600-$700 USD per 12K miles if you do your own MX which is extremely easy on the RT.  Majority of that cost is tires every 10-12K depending on how/where you ride.

Greetings, you don't mention what year of RT that you want to move to? I sold my 2014 FJR ES and bought a 2008 RT, 45,000 kilometers on the clock and could not be happier. The RT does what I am looking for in a long distance touring bike as did the FJR. However, the RT is lighter, seems to handle better and I prefer a twin over a four cylinder (but that is just me). As for maintenance, the basics, tires, brakes, fluids are pretty much the same. The valves are much easier to access and set on the RT same as the throttle body sync. I like the single sided swing arm on the RT, which makes changing tires easier. The drive shaft on the FJR is really easily accessible and makes lubrication a breeze - not so easy on the RT. My experience with both and with other bike I have owned - Ducati, airhead BMW, Suzuki, if you stay on top of the maintenance the bike will serve you well, my Ducati ST3 had over 100,000 K on the clock and ran like the day I bought it.`


The FJR is a great bike, and much faster than the RT; however, the RT is fast enough for want I want and gets much better gas mileage than the FJR. Have fun with your decision
