Going by my experience with the BMW system it sounds like a good idea...

Its hard to give a definite yes or no.  It would seem iPhones are problematic and if you are an Apple person then its probably going to save some heartache.

If you are an Android person then you can think of a second phone as your old GPS/ZumoXT and donate it to the bike.  If you go that way the TFT works well (once you have a simple way of importing routes, I use MyRouteApp and its simple)  With the TFT you can zoom in/out on maps, repeat instructions, search for POI's, skip waypoints etc. with the wonderwheel.

Time will tell if mobile phones are robust enough to live in pockets without vibration damping.

You mean like this? App works but has limited search options and not easy/fast to work while riding. Just to zoom in or out requires too much menu options to go through. Plan route and load into GPS, doesn't get easier than that too.

Ram ball threaded for that adapter

I don't have an XT but I still use my Zumo 660. I will continue to use it untill/if I get the connectivity/voice issues resolved with the TFT and App on the new bike.
I suspect that I will probably use it after that when leading tours etc as they can be quite long and complicated when planned on BaseCamp. I've included some pictures if they are of any use.
