Final Drive Boot Assembly

Post by Our Gee »

Does anyone know what type of "Sealant" is used by BMW during assembly of the Rubber Boot which goes between the Final Drive and the Swing Arm. It's the white stuff which is very sticky and seems to do a good job.
The Haynes manual says to use "Silicone Grease", some of which I have but this seems quite soft and runny compared to the originally applied BMW stuf.
Thanks.

Thanks for the info David. Wow, that's expensive stuff, so much in fact I'll give it a miss. I have found something which sounds like it has a similar application range in the back of my cupboard and that is, "Optimol Paste White T" which is a Castrol product. I'll give it a go and see how it performs.
Thanks again.

I have just replaced mine, when I took it off and examined it, it had 3 splits/holes in it !
I used non hardening gasket compound to seal both ends of the boot, if that helps anyone :-)

In the UK, there is a company called Omega Lubricants who sell a Staburags NBU 30 PTM equivalent.

Although in this link, Omega 85 SSP – Kluber Staburags NBU 30 PTM Equivalent Grease – Sovereign Lubricants (UK) Ltd (sovereign-omega.co.uk) 85 SSP is recommended, when asked, I was pointed towards Omega 99FG.

Unfortunately, their minimum size is a 500g tub for £62, a lot more expensive than a 50g tube of Staburags. If you used a lot or wish to sell smaller quantities, it is certainly better value for money per 50g.

Antifriction Components in Stockton have confirmed a 50g tube of Staburags can be had for £23.

At just less than £20, it's cheaper from BMW, Search|Chester Motorrad (chester-motorrad.co.uk)

It gets better, I can get it from my friends at Vertu BMW Motorrad Sunderland for £17.68.

Don't waste your money on the BMW stuff, it just dries out after a while. Look at it the first time you take the boot off. Any good white lithium grease works much better.

In this MAX BMW video, How to Perform a Final Drive Service on a 2007 BMW R1200RT - YouTube at 5:53, a new boot is fitted dry without any grease.

I just did but managed to get the price down to £17.68 ordered from a local BMW car dealer, saves a 70 miles round trip to Sunderland.

I got a tube of white lithium grease from a shop that sells 3D printers... They use it to lubricate the slides on 3D printers. It was AU$20 so pretty cheap.

I bought some Staburags

Yes it wasn't cheap but it will last a long time

A lot of people say its rubbish because it dries out but when I took my rear apart the boots where well stuck and sealed and that's what it is designed to do
