Undo the auto lock for Gas Cap
Undo the auto lock for Gas Cap
Anyone know how to disable the auto lock on a Gas Cap (I have a 2021 R1250RT)
If it takes you all day to do something you used to do all day, you are getting old.

The cap lock "appears" to be electrically operated, at a guess, could try and disconnect it at the plug and see what happens.

I would expect that to leave it permanently locked.David. wrote: The cap lock "appears" to be electrically operated, at a guess, could try and disconnect it at the plug and see what happens.

I think wethead is asking if the auto-lock function can be coded out so he can open the cap with the bike running,(I may be wrong) as sometimes there can be a time delay from when the bike is turned off to the fuel cap releasing.

Re: Undo the auto lock for Gas Cap
Is the "Keyless Ride" possibly designed to prevent opening of the fuel filler cap whilst the bike is running, H&S and all that.
Once the ignition has been switched off, if the 2 min waiting time for opening the fuel filler cap is exceeded, there is another option. That is, bring the radio-operated key into range and open the cap.
Is this latter option available whilst the bike is running.

It's designed to stop you opening while the bike is running or running and moving, just like taking your key from the ignition barrel and unlocking a cap.David. wrote: Is the "Keyless Ride" possibly designed to prevent opening of the fuel filler cap whilst the bike is running, H&S and all that.

You can cheat and open it, then start the bike leaving the cap open if needed.

No you have to turn the ignition on and then off again, having the key in range won't just let you open the cap (mine won't anyway)
No because the bike is running, refer to option 1 above
Would it not be best to ask the OP what he is trying to achieve rather than asking your own questions second guessing what the OP is hoping to achieve.....only asking

I don't feel its right to be discussing my bike and posting pictures of the manual on somebody else's tread, as this doesn't reflect the OP question.

With the radio-operated key in range, the cap opens on this GS, BMW R1250 GSA new fuel cap / Emergency key issue? - YouTube
But then, the GS 'is' the better bike.

Re: Undo the auto lock for Gas Cap
Not wanting to get dragged into this thread. But I just went out to my garage without my key and the fuel cap is locked. Went back out with the key and after a 30 secs the cap would open, the bike hasn't been run for a couple of days. So the cap does open with the key in range 2019 1250RT if that makes any difference.
Re: Undo the auto lock for Gas Cap
Its not often that someone on the road starts running out of gas, stop to get some, and cannot open the gas cap; not often, but it happened to me once and I do not want to experience that again.
I have never had a gas cap come open neither in a car nor on a bike while the vehicle is running. And if someone wanted to steal gas, I doubt a bike would be the preferred target.
I don't like the dependance on the electronics to open the gas cap; in fact, I dont really like the keyless contraption. If anyone ever built a retro key-using mechanism for my '21 RT I would probably buy it.

Is it not possible to replace the cap with a key operated one, maybe have to replace the ring as well but it must be doable. Just a thought.

Re: Undo the auto lock for Gas Cap
How about this for an idea. As the bike is under warranty, get the BMW dealer to switch the keyless cap for a keyed version.
A guy (Kostik) on the R1200R Forum was successful, Keyless gas cap problem (again ... and again) | BMW R1200R Forum
"They agreed to install a keyed cap using the fob key (same as the seat), leaving the keyless ignition".

Re: Undo the auto lock for Gas Cap
As a keyless rider i have to know whether this is a common/known issue. Not had an issue myself but ive not put much mileage on the bike.
