  I has anyone changed the headlight bulbs to brighter ones,
  and if so what have you used.

The favoured option appear to be Cyclops LED’s.

I've used brighter ones in the past. They're somewhat brighter and whiter but don't last long. They have a life expectancy in the hundreds of hours. Not worth the trouble IMHO
I have switched to an LED bulb and haven't had to replace it in more than 50K km.
