So my previously totally reliable 2008 R1200RT has now let me down. Initially the fault manifested itself by the bike cutting out whilst riding, as if the ignition were just switched off, but ignition on and display showing engine MIL.
Switched off and tried to restart, but now greeted with the large EWS and dead bike.
Eventually pushed the bike home and have then carried out the following:-

1) Replaced battery with new one.

2) Tried different keys (keeping other keys away from antenna).

3) Substituted brand new antenna plugged in loose with key taped in position and plastic dummy key in ignition.

4) Removed bodywork and fuel tank and accessed ECU. Checked continuity on all four wires between antenna and ECU plugs.

5) In desperation, contacted my local BMW Mottoradd after sales, who stated other than changing antenna, they did not really want to work on 2008 bike, as they charge £100/hr and investigating the fault would eat up hours - Great customer support!

Just cant get rid of the EWS alarm. No independent BMW in area and not sure how to proceed - Any advise Please?

Hi and welcome to the forum

The first port of call is to have it scanned for fault codes

Does the bike have the factory fitted alarm? I could be totally off the mark here! but I'm sure I read something somewhere about the batteries in the alarm/imobiliser near the tail light being dead and showing a similar fault.
The GS 'is' the better bike :-)

Not aware of any alarm unit, but will check in the rear section tomorrow. Thank you.

No alarm unit fitted. I shall try and get a diagnostic to read fault codes.

Found to be BMS-K (ECU) failure. Replaced with secondhand BMS-K.
Now to decide if I bother to send away to have ecu files transferred to stop odometer flashing, caused by different mileage in ecu than display.

Where in the are you based as there are quite a few smaller garages which can run a diagnostic scan at probably half the price of the main dealer?

I dont need a diagnostic now as I have determined the ecu was faulty and replaced it with one from another bike. I now have a perfectly useable bike. My understanding is that diagnostic software would now only allow sync of odometer reading to higher value of ecu or display. With the replacement ecu having a much higher odometer value than the bike actual mileage recorded on the display, I beleiev I would need to send both u/s and replacement ecus to specialist company to copy and paste u/s ecu files on replacement p (cost £215).

@Cornwall You are right you would have to send it away or go visit someone with the bike who can do this

Diagnostic software would not be able to alter mileage on the bike at all
