Re: 2021 Nav system alternate.
I had a look at the FMS product and it's got some good and unobtrusive ideas so...
I've ordered up some copper shielding sheet and together with some plain aluminium sheet I have in stock, I'll form something similar to the FMS idea which is hopefully even less obvious and which doesn't rely on drilling the panelling behind the TFT.
As this bike doesn't have the speakers option fitted there is ready access behind the speaker panels to access the ground points that I've fitted for accessories.
Btw has anyone else used the Bimmer site pages to check their machine's fitted options based on entering its VIN? I checked mine last evening and it seems to be accurate.

I have the FMS shield on a Zumo XT mount above my TFT (removed mushroom) and keyless. It doesn't interfere.sakm wrote: ↑Thu Nov 24, 2022 4:02 pmThen you need to go careful on how you shield I otherwise key may well not be picked upExcellence wrote: ↑Thu Nov 24, 2022 3:40 pm Yes I have keyless. I'm going to search for that shielding firm.
You will need something to stop RFID I believe
Something like this might be worth a punt for testing purposes

I have a wireless charger for my phone mounted on a RAM mount in place of the BMW logo on the handlebar (phone is too big for the phone cubby). That can cause interference when it's charging the phone. I just learned to put my phone in the charger after starting the bike. Waving the fob between the charger and the TFT also works.

Re: 2021 Nav system alternate.
Here's the shield so far
Waiting for the top and bottom face woven copper sheets. Once they're bonded on and grounded through the ground strap it'll get a coat of stone chip then matt black for a pinseal like finish. After that it's just a case of bonding the flap under the ram mount to the panelwork, put the AV bumpers on, slip on the rear edge protector strip on and that's it!
Pleased so far.

Re: 2021 Nav system alternate.
Yes - it worked!
All finished now. Made another couple of cuts to allow the speaker blanks to be removed easily to get at cabling. The GPS head picked up a signal at about 20s.
Applying the copper sheet anything like flat/smooth was like wrestling snakes!!
At the same time I slipped in a bit of weather protection for the TFT connection pins behind the screen.
As a precaution the GPS cable is run clear away from the screen so that will need to be tidied up a bit.
The edges of the shield are well clear of the edges of the TFT to avoid diffraction.
Now for some roads clear of wet salt to ride on!!

Re: 2021 Nav system alternate.
Just to add to the thread, picked up my 2022 R1250RT fitted with a Wunderlich base holder for original Navigator - black - Part No. 21170-702 and I'm getting the "Lost Satellite Signal". Had time to play with it today, The Navi has lost its location 4 out of 5 times over three days.
The satellite signal strength indicator on the Nav VI is only 1 or 2 bars when the ignition is on/engine running.
Thanks, Peter

Re: 2021 Nav system alternate.
As I don't have the fabrication skills of @Excellence :-) I contacted Frank at FMS Solutions mentioned above. Got a very helpful reply and have an FMS RFI Shield on the way to the UK.
The FMS Website does not allow you to complete international purchases and I had a problem with the contact form. However using the contact e-mail they list I got replies overnight/next day which is very reasonable when you consider the time differences:-).
Will let you know how I get on when it arrives. Peter

Re: 2021 Nav system alternate.
After my first ride since Christmas it's a complete thumbs up for the EMR screen above the TFT.
Before leaving the driveway the Zumo 590 got a signal after about a minute and didn't lose it once during a ride out this morning into the hilly bit of Aberdeenshire.
On the way back I left off energising the accessories including the 590 until a couple of minutes after moving off from the cafe to come home. Normally the unit wouldn't get a signal while I was moving especially in the valleys between our hills - but again, after about a mile the signal was acquired and it stayed in solidly the whole way home which is about 26 miles.
I can only imagine that those who have ordered the FMS unit will be well pleased with their purchase!

Re: 2021 Nav system alternate.
An update on the journey I have been on – no pun intended!
I ordered the FMS RFI guard as mentioned above, it arrived in good time and looks well made. I was hoping to “modify” it to fit the Wunderlich bracket already installed. However, it required quite a lot of machining to fit (should have brought the FMS bracket too!) and I don’t have the equipment to do so.
I was already booked into my local BMW dealer to have the locking mount (attached the Wunderlich bracket) replaced as it was damaged during installation. Before the appointment they highlighted BMW now have their own solution and I decided to go that route, all BMW has to work! It is rubber mounted on the underside of the yoke – see photos.
On the 100 mile ride home it worked perfectly, it has the added benefit of being closer than dash mounted and easier to use the touch screen.
Hope that helps, Peter
