Engine compatibility

Post by pencile »

I have a 2016 R1200RT (K52) with a terminally dead engine. There is an engine that is available but its a R1200RS K54. Does anyone know if it would fit my (K52) bike ?

The only assistance I can offer with this one is to say that when looking at the MAX BMW Parts Fiche, the first 10 digits of the 11 digits part numbers are the same. The last digit may be the engine colour, silver/black or which bike the engine fits.

On this occasion, best check with a BMW dealer or independent BMW specialist. (I'd be very surprised if they weren't the same).

R1200RT K52 11 00 8 389 101 ENGINE SILVER
R1200RT K52 11 00 8 389 102 BLACK ENGINE

R1200RS K54 11 00 8 389 100 BLACK ENGINE

Thanks for looking into this for me good sir. I have contacted a number of dealers and even BMW motorrad, to no avail. Everyone is saying the same thing.. Pretty sure it will, but ... I bmw is a smart company that does not build specific engines for every model they bring on the market. But there could be small things that are different and its a $3K gamble. Just not sure, guess I'll let this circulate a while longer and maybe do some more snooping in hopes

When searching for part numbers on MAX BMW or RealOEM, knowing the last 7 digits of the VIN number is helpful.

As an example, when looking for my Camhead K26 engine part number, RealOEM tells me that the same engine is fitted to K25 (GS & GSA), K27 (R) & K21 (R nineT).

Now that's helpful!! i didn't know that, assuming that, I'll check it tonight. Assuming the color doesn't exclude it from being a compatible part lol!!
Thanks David!!

When you have identified the engine part number in RealOEM, "click" on it and it'll take you to other bikes which share the same part number.

Once you've got the engine part number, the BMW dealer should be able to confirm fitment too.

OK, I used the LAST 7 of the VIN and it only showed the 11 00 8 389 101 engine with only the K52 compatibility as a silver engine.. no black. The K54 shows same part number only 100 at the end, only black. Same thing you found. Looking at the parts list and engine pics, it looks exactly the same with with only color being the difference. Just wished I knew what that last number means!!!!! UUUUuuug..... Should I gamble or not??? LOL :?
