First post here. Not really a Newbie

Post by MoPops »

I’ve had five previous BMWs. But this is my first RT. Bought a 2010 with 19,000 miles on it. Previous owner was very meticulous about maintenance, but did it all himself. I actually don’t pick it up until first wk of Jan (if the weather cooperates).
Previous owner says the service light is on because the bike needs something done only a dealer can do with their computer. I’m assuming it’s something to do with syncing the throttle bodies. Not sure. Not sure you even do that on a 2010 RT.
I’ll get it in to my local dealer after I get it home. I think it may have a recall out on it too.
It has luxury package, radio, everything but a gps. I need to add something so I can use my XT.
Anything else I should look at specific to a 2010 RT? FD fluid was just changed. I’ll find out if splines were checked.

Looking for an active RT group, besides FB. Would rather not hang out on FB. Lots to learn.
Thanks,
Jeff

Hi Jeff, I had a 2010 and now a 2012 Camhead, both the same bikes. The service light will be on for no other reason than the distance travelled or time elapsed since the last service has been exceeded. The service intervals are usually set at 6,000 miles or 12 months. My bike should have had the engine synchronisation (throttle bodies) checked last week but the BMW dealer didn't put it on the workshop job card, therefore, wasn't done. Will now leave it until the next service. The service indicator can be reset by anyone who has access to a GS-911, not just the BMW dealer. I seem to think my 2010 model had a recall but can't remember what it was. I've got the genuine BMW GPS mount with a Zumo 660 cradle, same 4 bolt mount as an XT. I've never done the splines but with assistance may have a go at it. I don't use FB either and find forums like this one more user friendly as a source of information. Welcome, David.

Hi and welcome to the forum

If you are planning on continuing to maintain it yourself then look at investing in either a diagnostic tool like the GS-911 or the Motoscan app

https://www.hexcode.co.za/

https://www.motoscan.de/

Both will be able to turn the service light off and perform other related tasks that are supposed to be dealer only

Thanks David and sakm. The bike comes with the service manual, so I’m going to attempt as much of the service work as I can. The St Louis MO BMW dealer is a good one, and they just moved to right near my home. So I’ll get it in there and get the recall checked for sure.
I’ll also look into a code reader. This is my first BMW with ESA. I’m kind of on the fence about it. Part of me wants to see if it does much, and how well, another part of me says it’s just something else to go wrong. Ha

The ESA pre-load adjustment is useful if frequently switching from rider only, to rider with luggage or rider and pillion plus luggage. The rear of the bike can be seen and felt to rise and lower.

When it comes to the damping, Comfort, Normal or Sport, I really cannot feel any difference. Once had the dealer check its' function as I didn't think it was working when it was. I usually have it set in Comfort mode and just leave it there. This might also be a reflection of the poor road surfaces in the UK.

Sakm, looking at these. Can I actually do the throttle body sync with this? I know a little about it, but not much. The app linked to is android only. I use an iPhone, I’m sure there must be a version for iPhones. I confess I haven’t looked yet. I also need to determine which hexcode I need to get for a 2011.
Thanks. I’m guessing it’s less expensive to buy the device/cable/and app than it will be for the BMW dealer to do one check up and throttle body sync. I just don’t want to screw something up with it. And, of course get the correct items.
Thanks again

I can't be certain on the throttle body sync as I'm not sure on the actual procedure for your bike

It does it on mine but mines all flyby wire and all electronically controlled

If your model is on cables then I suspect you may need a throttle body balancing gauge which are cheap enough

In the UK, service items have a code, description and an AW. The AW is the workshop labour time charged for a particular task. One hour has an AW of 12.00.

Code 13 60 502 is Correcting engine synchronisation and has an AW of 8.00. This is 8/12th of the hourly labour rate for the task.

I have had this task completed by a local independent BMW specialist as a stand alone job. A BMW dealer offered to do the same too.

The BMW Service, code 00 00 111 has an AW of 5.00. This should include resetting the service-due date and service countdown distance.
