For Ilium rear crash bars users only...
When riding with sport riding friends, I usually leave the bags at home and remove the rear crash guards - they are there to protect my bags in the event of a low or zero speed drop, not to protect in the event of a lowside.
When I remove the crash guards there is usually some light rust or discoloration of the stubs. This doesn't look great, so I made some caps to go over the stubs left on the bike, which also ensures the Allen bolts and the contoured washer don't get lost.

If the poll is for Ilium rear crash bars users only, can I vote for, I don't have Ilium rear crash guards.
I ride without bags and don't have rear crash guards fitted.

I ride most of the time with the illium rears removed and no bags. I bought mine from Sporttouring, the chap who runs the shop is Mike and he offers a good service. I would though go black, rather than silver. I've had to change 3 sets of silver front and rears due to corrosion. The Black bars have been fine.

I don't have the above fitted to my bike but i have Wunderlich copies fitted. The rear bars are too much of a flath to remove. These bars look a bit like strange ears without cases. I fitted bags to my rear bars.
Trust me I am a retired Doctor and lecturer at Oxford University of Structural and Mechanical/Electrical engineering.

Some parts for my RS are herehttps://www.advrider.com/f/threads/what ... 79/page-67, post 1340.
The caps are very basic, attached.
Its just a fun hobby, which also allows me to make things that I can't buy because the don't exist. I'm neither a designer nor an engineer, so it's not exactly highly skilled stuff.

Very nice covers. I don't bother and just put some grease on them. If the tabs have a light rust on them, I just use a bit of wire wool to remove it. I also do not leave the screws in, I keep them with the bars.Been doing this for 4 years

Not a fan of bike cleaning or wire brushing anything, I'd rather be riding:)
Perhaps the difference is that I very rarely ride with the bags mounted. Just the 29L topbox for daily riding around, and the panniers and 409L topbox for longer trips.

Terrible, so I usually leave the excess 360L at at home, along with my fat non-typing thumb;)
