Any failures count! a failure is a failure regardless of who or where they are
I am more interested in why they fail and trying to prevent that
From images I have seen of failures it seems to be the UJ's that let go whether this is due to seized splines is anyone's guess

Could always email Robbert surveybmwdriveshaft@ziggo.nl and ask how he got on with his survey.
"The assignment will cover common failures of the drive-shaft of BMW R1200 model motorcycles. It will contain an analysis of the failure modes, a root cause analyse and when possible advise how to prevent these failures."

Hmmm… for me it’s not a question of trusting the BMW over the 5k miles of our proposed trip. It’s more of a belt and braces thing of it being miles from home in Greece with dubious dealer coverage and a possibility of something going wrong and the costs involved.
Do I trust the bike? Yeah, if I didn’t I wouldn’t be going, but as much as any piece of machinery it can go wrong.
Is that worth £100’s worth of cover-all insurance for relative peace of mind? Absolutely!

Thanks for that Steve,that looks very good value indeed.Have you/anyone used it before.Ive got full RAC European cover,that would be a great addition, especially the garage costs.

It came off the UKGSER site where it was recommended there. Happily I have had no need to use it so far.

Have a look at https://www.startrescue.co.uk/breakdown ... uick-quote I have them for my car and found them quick to respond when I had a blowout, then the locking wheel nut failed while trying change the wheel. My bike is still covered by BMW warranty.

Cheers Glen, but I'll go with what Steve posted as I already have full UK & European RAC cover,so this will be about garage cost more than anything else

Anyway back on topic!
I have seen that you can get a grease needle for getting in to the UJ bearings to allow you to grease them up
When I next have my shaft out which is overdue by my standards! I will see if you could get in the grease them.
That combined with lubed splines and sealed boots should be surely enough to help prevent failures
