Pannier question

07 RT. My RH pannier feels like it has too much play when attached to the bike. I push the handle down, and at the back plunger bar comes up to it's locking position. I've checked the rubber blocks by the pillion pegs and all is OK but i can still shake the panniers. Is there any adjustment to the plunger bar as this seems like the only thing that locks the pannier on?

I noticed this as soon as I got my bike home. A quick search on line confirmed that this is not uncommon. I played around with various thicknesses of rubber attached with double sided tape to the plunger which definitely improved things. I think there might have been a BMW kit mentioned somewhere that did the same job rather more neatly.

#23 in the above parts diagram is described as a support. I think it's like a foot on the end of the rising bar which locks the pannier onto the bike.

The is also what is described as a set of clamps with bracket. These look like different thicknesses to adjust the fit of the pannier.

This could be the standard one as it is sold seperately.

46547712002 seems to be available on-line from BMW Motorrad in the States but not in Europe.
I should find out where my nearest dealer is and see if they can get hold of them. The last time I was in a BMW bike dealer was over 25 years ago!

That is the one which MAX BMW describe as a support, sold separately.
Perhaps this is original (standard fitment) and the others sold as a set are to improve the pannier fit as things wear with age.

So is the difference just the footplate thickness?. I've searched the web and cannot find any various thicknesses being sold. If its just the foot, thats easy i can make a block to marry up to the foot

I was just cutting rubber of various thicknesses and sticking it to this plate.
The other thing that occurs to me is that I haven't tried refitting the panniers after having the side plates powder coated. I bet there's a few mm of tolerance in the exact positioning of the lower pannier mount when you torque them down.

This is true, I know someone who removed/refitted a footrest plate and found that the pannier wouldn't fit correctly. He adjusted the footrest plate and all was good.

Fixed it. So simple. It turned up to be one of the top fixing cups on the pannier. The bit where the pannier hangs from is at the top at the back. The Cup inside the pannier was loose. I super glued the cup and now the pannier doesn't shake about. Make a change for a cheap BMW fix
